ROGER MARMET Obituary

Roger Thomson Marmet "Tom"
On October 24, 2018, the Washington community lost Tom Marmet, beloved son of Roger and Betsy and brother of Sally Marmet. Tom was doing what he loved, volunteering at So Others Might Eat, a community-based organization that helps the poor and homeless in DC. Tom was an exceptional and compassionate human being who modeled integrity, respect, and care for others. Tom was a 2014 graduate of Maret School, and recently graduated with Honors from the University of Vermont. He was a loyal and dependable friend who was committed to a life of service and nonviolence and making the world a better place. Tom is also survived by his devoted grandparents Sandy and Sally Thomson, his loving aunts and uncles and 12 cousins. Tom will be missed by all who knew him, but never forgotten. A memorial service honoring his life will be held at St Albans Church, 3001 Wisconsin Avenue, Washington DC 20016 at 2 p.m. on Monday October 29, 2018. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Tom's honor to So Others Might Eat or Everytown For Gun Safety.

Dear Betsy and Tom and Sally, We are simply stunned by the sadness of this senseless event. Tom was loved and admired by his whole Maret class and by anyone who knew him. As Marjo said, he was kind to everyone, he always helped out, and he was the glue that held the class together. We were out of town for the service, but we know you're surrounded by this whole community who loves you and supports you all. We stand with you and we will be here to walk through this great sadness together. Love, Amy and Mark Tercek

Roger, Betsy and Sally, we are so sorry for your loss, but we feel fortunate to have known Tom and your family. He was a truly positive force in the world and left the DC community a better place. He was a wonderful young man and showed it in so many ways. We knew him as a great teammate to Nicky at Maret and a kind young man to everyone he met. Roger thank you for your wonderful remarks at the service for everyone to find a way to contribute the way Tom would do. We are thinking of Tom and all of you. The Leonards - Paul, Susan, Allie and Nick.

Dear Betsy, Roger and Sally
As you so well know, Tom was one of my daughter's closest friends -- a gentle, kind, funny and endlessly compassionate young man whose mere presence made you smile, even if you hadn't felt like it a second before. I used to love watching him watching her, a slow smile spreading across his lips as she talked. We all loved him dearly, even those of us who didn't get to know him as much as we would have liked during his far-too-short time on Earth. He was killed by a stray bullet, after leaving work helping addicts find work and feeding the homeless. Not a self-righteous bone in his body, no patronizing sense of charity. Just the real thing. We weep for you and hold you close today, on the day your family buries you. But your spirit, your smile, and your beautiful, beautiful eyes will stay with us.
With love and deep sadness
Alexis Jetter, for Evann Orleck-Jetter, Raphael Orleck-Jetter, and Annelise Orleck

I live in NE DC, quite close to the community center he served at and to where he left our world. He seemed like someone dedicated to making the world better. Our community is worse off. I am sorry for your loss.

Marmet family,

My name is Molly Taylor, and I met Tom the first summer I was hired at Maret. I helped on the Honduras summer program, and Tom was one of our students. I am heartbroken to hear of this tragic loss. Tom made an impression on me as a kind and thoughtful boy, at the time just a freshman in high school. I am so impressed with the young adult that he grew to be, and his dedication to helping others. I am so sorry for your loss. I have attached a picture I found from that summer with Tom in it--I believe it was taken toward the end of the trip, and it looks like we had some treats to celebrate.

I am thinking of your family and of Tom, and sending love.
