Roger Neighborgall Obituary

Roger Beckley Neighborgall, Jr., passed away peacefully with his family and friends by his side on Sunday, February 25, 2024. He was raised in Vienna, Virginia, the son of Roger Beckley Neighborgall, Sr. and Barbara Flanagan Mackey, attending public schools there and graduating from James Madison High School in 1972.

Beloved by all who knew him, Roger is survived by his immediate family, life partner Rebecca Smith Neighborgall of Durham, NC; daughter, Kellie of Camden, SC; son, Jason of Atlanta, GA; sisters, Christa Van der Veer and Lisa Mathieu of northern Virginia.

At Madison High School, Roger starred in football, baseball, and basketball. As quarterback for MHS he led his team against the fabled TC Williams Titans and into the state championship final his senior year. As a junior, Roger was an ace pitcher for MHS, leading the team to the state high school baseball championship. Blessed with legendary arm strength and football acumen, Roger was recruited by scores of colleges and signed a football scholarship to attend Duke University. There he started at quarterback in 1973 against NC State, became a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and graduated from Duke in 1976. Upon graduation, Roger founded a moving and storage business in Durham and married the love of his life, Becky. Together they raised their children in Durham. Along the way, Roger was instrumental in building North Durham Little League and supporting Duke University athletics.

Roger's family wishes to thank all who cared for him at Duke Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Roger's memory can be made to the Hock Family Pavilion, the Emily K. Center or the Iron Dukes at Duke University.

A memorial service for Roger will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, April 8, in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens at Duke University, with a reception there immediately following the service. Clements Funeral Service is handling the arrangements.

Roger was my favorite guy all through high school, and I loved him very much. He was such a wonderful person with lots of talent and great personality. I will always miss him. I´m so sorry for his family and friends. I know how much he was loved.
