Ruth P. Freese-Vaughn, a resident at Sunrise of Fairfax, died peacefully Sunday morning, April 27, 2003 at Inova Fairfax Hospital, after suffering a heart attack, due to an extended illness.
Ms. Freese-Vaughn was a long time resident of Fairfax, VA and Tucson, AZ. She moved to the Washington area from California in 1963, newly wed to her third husband, Ralph E. Freese, (Ret. Lt. Col., USA) (USMA '41), who died in 1968. She was preceded in death by her son, Brian J. Kaumeier, who died in 1986. Her fourth marriage to Jasper M.P. Vaughn (Ret. Col. USAF) of Las Vegas, NV ended in divorce; as did her marriages to the late Clifford L. Fretwell of Salt Lake City, UT and Robert P. Kaumeier of Port Huron, MI.
Ms. Freese-Vaughn, 77, was born June 23, 1925 in Port Huron, MI. She was the daughter of the late Fred Ellis Kessell and Ida Whaley-Kessell of Port Huron and Tucson, AZ, and the sister of the late Merle Brolliar of Seattle, WA and Freda O'Neal of Palo Alto, CA, and the niece of the late Lotta Marie McCarthy and Ruth Whaley Karros of Detroit, MI and Ft. Myers, FL.
Ruth is survived by her beloved daughter, Laurie K. Young (Fretwell) of Fairfax, VA and granddaughter, Julie Marie Bass of Richmond, VA. She is also survived by her loving daughter, Carol S. Green (Kaumeier) of Portland, OR; four other grandchildren, Michael J. Green and Donna L. Simmet of Portland; David J. and Andrew E. Kaumeier of Alexandria, VA; four great-grandchildren, Mason and Benjamin Green, Haley-Rose Kaumeier, and Joseph Simmet; two sisters, Carol Scholtz and Sharon McNeil, both of Arizona, and Joan Ziebol of Ft. Myers, FL, and many loving nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Ruth was a lively, colorful and fun-loving personality. In lieu of a memorial service, a celebration of remembrance will be held for Ruth at the family home in Fairfax on Sunday, May 18 from 1 to 4 p.m. Info, 703-280-2523.
