Ryan J. Montgomery Obituary

Ryan J. Montgomery and his twin brother, Bryan, had been together from band camp to boot camp to Iraq, where they served in the same unit. The pair were known for their infectious laughter. "My brother and I always lived like a laugh could solve anything," Bryan Montgomery wrote in a letter read at his brother's funeral. Ryan Montgomery, 22, of Greensburg, Ky., was killed July 3 when an explosive detonated near his vehicle in Baghdad. He was based in Campbellsville, Ky. Montgomery joined the military in September 2000, during his senior year of high school. Musically inclined, Montgomery played in the marching band and jazz band."Ryan Montgomery was killed in Iraq serving the country he loved," his family said in a statement. "Ryan was proud of his unit and believed in what he was doing. He was loved by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten."

I served with ryan and bryan in the 623rd. We went to fort campbell in 2003 but didn't go over seas that time. I transfered out of the unit so that i could go with another instead i missed the opportunity to serve with them when it came time. I did go in 2006 / 2007 but it's not the same as going with those who treated you like family. I will always remember ryan and do each time i hear of another fallen soldier. Sgt James W. Ryan as the holidays get closer the more my heart hurts. I know this is your favorite time of year. There is always an empty place at the table and I know that no day will ever be the same. You are always with me no matter what. It hurts just as much today as it did July 3,2005. My heart is as broken today as it was then. As I struggle through another holiday season without you know that you are in my heart and soul and I love you with all my heart.
I love you Sweetheart!

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Ryan, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

No bond is as great as that between a parent and child. My deepest condolences are with you as you grieve. Our son, Spc. Eric Judd, who is currently serving in Afghanistan, is also a member of the 623rd, and proudly serves in the memory of all the fallen, but especially Ryan. We never knew the pain of seperation from one of our children as we do right now, but we both have had to admit that Eric is in the Lord's loving and protective care, and He can handle that job a lot better than we ever could. Our soldiers are now all our sons, and as such, we all need to lift them up in prayer. My heart is with you, the Montgomery family, and it is my prayer that God will allow your memories of Ryan to soon ease the pain of your loss...but rest assured, you will all be together again.

Both Ryan and Bryan remain to be two of the very most special people in my memories and heart. I stumbled upon this website by accident, but couldn't pass up the chance to express my deepest sympathies, though 9 months later. For a family so pure in heart and two brothers with smiles always on their faces and willing to offer a much needed hug of comfort on days of disappointment, I send you my love and sympathies. Life does not always make sense, but for sure you should know that you can be proud of your sons. Ryan was a beautiful person and will never be forgotten. Much love,

My Son (Ryan)

A young soldier, a hero, my son

Hopes, dreams, breath there is none

Every moment, filled with such pain

As I clutch your picture, and call out your name

Stumbling blindly, through tear after tear

People are talking, but it’s your voice I hear

Don’t worry mama. I’ll be ok

We’ll see each other again someday

In my heart, you will always find

Your smiling face and your hand in mine

I’m so proud Ryan, of what you have done

But most of all, that you are my son.

I love you Sweetheart

I am Ryan's mother and I want to thank all of you for the kind words. I miss him so much every minute of the day and he will be in my heart and soul the rest of my life until I meet him in heaven. Ryan always had a smile on his face and made others smile. He was a wonderful son and soldier. He was so proud of what he did. He loved the family dinners we always had. Bryan and Ashley miss him as much as I do and There is always something missing here at home. It feels like a big part of our hearts are gone. Ryan was proud of the soldiers he served with and prayed for them every nite. He wrote this in a journal I recieved back). He loved pulling his truck((Thunderstruck)).All of your kind words mean the world to me and I come here and read when I am having a hard day.which are very often. I know Ryan is with me everyday because in some way or another he lets me know hes here. As I close Ryan I love you so much and miss you. There is not a moment of the day that you are not with me. I will see you in heaven some day waiting for me with those baby blue eyes and that sweet smile. I love you Babyboy!

Letter To Ryan

A silent numbness, I can't explain

Dazed and confused, I feel the pain

Sometimes I feel like this isn't real

Truth is hard to realize, its hard to deal

As time warps around me, life goes on

Still deep inside, I dont think you're gone

Its hard to believe, your life we have lost

You are my HERO! you paid the cost

I feel like I get little messages that you send

It gives me strength, when I miss my Friend

Thank You for being there, when I needed you most

You are the reason that I believe in ghost

I go to the graveyard, I sit and I wait

I talk for hours, then I lock the gate

So many questions, what can I say

As I go on living, day by day

I get so angry, and I dont know why

I talk to you for answers, and I start to cry

Living in memories hurts me the most

I still go to messenger and wait for a post

I look for your name in letters dark black

Then I remember you're not coming back

Our lives all changed 3rd day in July

It hurts to laugh now, it hurts to cry

I can't stand these feelings, they won't go away

It only gets worse with each and everyday

Its the little things that keep me going

While I wonder why, and never knowing

My heart is broken, God this hurts so bad

I think of the good times, and it makes me sad

I close my eyes, but I can't sleep

In my heart the pain is too deep

Hoping one day, this pain will get better

I sit at this computer, and I write you this letter

Ryan was my fiance. To this day, I miss him every second. He was also my best friend. Little things like playing in the rain or hearing a Garth Brooks song are not the same anymore because he is not here in person. I know that he is here with me in my heart. He is honestly an AMERICAN HERO. To everyone who knew him, he was always nice and polite. There is not one memory that I would take back with Ryan. His memory will always live on.

December 9, 2005

First and foremost, please accept our families thanks and praise for the job your son has done and the manner in which he as well as all the men of the 623rd have fearlessly defended the american policies and each other in this time of dire need for heros. My son spc. Daniel Mills is still in iraq with the 623rd and still speaks fondly of Ryan. He tells me of the bond he and his brother had and how all the men have band togather to make a family so far from the ones who love them.

The loss of Ryan effected each man in the unit in a profound way. The days after his death Daniel spoke of the loss as if he had lost a member of our family. In turn my wife and I feel asthough we too lost a member of our family.

I pray that your pain will ease in time and that the sacrifices that all our men and their families have made will never be forgotten.

our prayers are with you and all who knew and loved this american hero.

Well, nearly 4 months have passed by since the passing of Ryan. And to this day it is still difficult for me to face. A few years ago Ryan and I were mobilized together to Ft. Campbell. Although we were not deployed anywhere at that time, I created a near and dear friend at that point in time. We were part of the survey section together. Of that original survey section....Ryan and I were the only ones to deploy this time with the 623rd. It was very difficult to hear of your loss. But, be rest assured, Ryan is still with us.....and he is still overwatching all of the 623rd as I know that he was doing the night that he passed. My thoughts and prayers are with the Montgomery family. May God bless you and let freedon reign. SGT Bryan Ploughe A-1/623 FA

Words can not express how saddened we have been through the death of Ryan. My husband James Walker was truly honored to do his funeral. We did not have the great pleasure of knowing Ryan as well as some but we have truly learned through his family and his friends what a great person he was. We have grown close to his family and truly love all of them. Pat I can not even begin to imagine your pain and all I can say is we are here for you forever. Ray you know our hearts and you always know where we are and we are truly pleased that you and Sharon are members of our church and allowed us the opportunity to get to know and love your family. Bryan what can I say we love you and Brandy. James was truly honored when you all ask him to do your wedding. We are truly excited and happy to have an opportunity to enjoy a happy occassion with your family. You have amazed us through everything. I know that your smile keeps your family going. You have a huge heart and we know God has huge things in store for you. I have met a lot of people in my life that I have grown to admire for their strength and smile but I will have to say you top our list. We thank you for giving us the opportunity to know Ryan better through you. I will never forget the words Pat spoke to me at the funeral and I believe it gives her peace she said "I can look into my Bryan's eyes and see my Ryan". To me that was the most amazing thing. She truly finds strength in your smile and you being you. Ashley you made the govenor blush and I truly believe with all I have heard about Ryan he played a part in that. We love you all and we are always around if you need us. We are also truly PROUD of the pull truck. Bryan you made a promise and I believe without a doubt you have held true to that promise. I believe Ryan smiled down on you every time. I also believe his foot was probably on top of yours everytime. I know that had to make you smile. We love you all lots of prayers.

Dear Parents of such a fine man. I know since I worked with him. My heart has been heavy for your grief but also know God knows the very intent of our hearts and knows how to comfort us during these times. He sat with a group of us at break or lunch and talk of his plans and family. He made an impression on me. Only God can comfort your heart and lead your steps ahead. My prayers are with you in the days and nights in front of you now.

Sincerely

To the family of Ryan we honor his death with a sad heart. This fine young man that has given his life for his country has entered into Heaven where he will not fight any more battles. We are the Grandfather's (Bill Montgomery) brother and sister in- laws on Marietta's side. Know that our prayers for your strength and for the family as well as for his brother are with you from Fla. He will always be remembered as a fine young man that fought a battle for all of us and for that we Thank You Ryan. Be at peace! Betsy and Jim Ray

I knew Ryan well. I will always consider him a great and wonderful friend. He was my date to my Senior Prom.. we had such fun! I was horrified when I learned of his death. I am so sorry that this war has taken away a wonderfully warm, sweet, beautiful person from us. Bryan, you are in my thoughts and prayers. I'll come see you when I come home next time. May God keep him in His hands now and forever more, may He give his family peace and his brother strength. May He bless him and his family now and forever more.

I know you dont know me, but your son was fighting for our country and for that I am thankful for him. He was a hero, as are all the soldiers fighting for us. I pray that God gives you comfort during this tragic time for your family. I will be praying for your family.

I know Ryan has touched many lives during his lifetime and everyone who knew him was truly blessed by his presence. I only saw Ryan occasionally at family gatherings and I could tell that he had a wonderful way about him. I'm glad Brian had such a special person to grow up with and share the journey of his life.

We will all meet again......He still lives in our hearts.

Just wanted Montgomery's family to know that our prayers & thoughts are with them. Sgt. Timothy Bertram is my brother, I know he thought a lot of Ryan & his heart is hurting now because of his loss & especially Ryan's family's loss. Ryan most definitely made the ultimate sacrifice. He is a Hero!

My brother is SGT TImothy Bertram, he and Ryan were most always in the same humvee, Tim was the team leader/navigator and Ryan was his driver. Tim always said, "I couldn't ask for a better driver." "Our team is the most squared-away team." You could tell they were really close, I got as many pictures of Ryan as I did Tim! We all felt close to him, even though we have never met him, our hearts and much prayer go out to his family, friends, and every soldier's heart that's breaking. Keep up the good work, guys, Ryan would want you to keep truckin'!

Ryan was in my husband's squad his name is Sgt. Gerald Gribbins. What I remember about Ryan is that he was a good boy, would do anything for someone no matter what he had to do. Other people always came first before himself. He was always smiling and happy. Nothing seemed to bother him much that you could see on the outside. Myself and my husband will always have a place in our hearts for him and his brother Bryan. My husband said that he has lost one of his one of his brothers and hopes that time will heal all of our sorrow.
