SAEED KHAN Obituary

SAEED AHMED KHAN
Saeed Ahmed Khan of Vienna, VA passed away Saturday, April 11, 2015 at the age of 87. He is survived by his beautiful and loving wife, Behnaz Khan, his children Mark (Susan) Khan, Kamran (Linda) Khan, Chris Khan, Farah (Mark) Shanock, Kevin (Alana) Khan and Monica (Brian) Neshat-Cunningham, eight grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.

Saeed's life journey began on January 2, 1928 in British colonial India. Before his teenage years were over, he joined the British Indian Army Academy and was one of the first commissioned officers of the Pakistan Military Academy. He earned the rank of Captain in the Bengal Lancers Cavalry, swiftly attained prominence and was selected to two terms as aide-de-camp to the Governor General. Saeed became his closest confidant, accompanied him on official foreign visits, and witnessed history-making events in Pakistan. Saeed was also a talented horseman and polo player. In the mid-1950's, while working with the Governor General, he met and married a beautiful American stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Karachi. He immigrated to the US in 1955, became a citizen and resided here for 60 years. After settling in the DC area, he taught Urdu at the Foreign Service Institute. He had a distinguished career as a Protocol Officer of the US Department of State, his acumen in diplomacy made him a valued and trusted advisor. He was Chief of Protocol of the US Pavilion at the Seattle World's Fair in 1962, New York World's Fairs in 1964 and '65, Expo '67 in Montreal, Canada, and HemisFair '68 in San Antonio, TX. He left government service in 1971. After several careers and business ownership, he retired in 2007.

For almost 30 years, he and his loving and devoted wife, Behnaz, happily resided in Vienna, VA. Saeed's enduring interests included restoring antique automobiles and playing at the Blackjack table, while enjoying cigarettes and a good scotch. Though his health greatly declined in recent years, he cherished his time with family and felt great joy being around his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Saeed ultimately succumbed to his long illness, but never lost his spirit, style or sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

A memorial celebration will be held on Sunday, April 19 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Ritz-Carlton Tyson's Corner.

I remember Saeed endlessly working on old Mercedes Benz vehicles in the driveway when I was an adolescent. He was our next-door neighbor, a very nice man who invited our family over to meet the camel driver that Pres Johnson invited to the US when he was vice President. Big national news. Mark, I see how you miss him. He is remember by many others, too. My best regards. Diana Valis, your next-door neighbor and babysitter!

Dear Behnaz,
We are so deeply sorry for your loss. Saeed Khan was a truly special person to all of us. His memory will always be in our hearts. A fighter until the very end, he loved life and his lovely wife, family, and friends above all else. While his death leaves an emptiness that no one can heal, his love still endures, and leaves us with memories that neither distance nor time can ever steal.
