SHIRLEY YETMAN Obituary

YETMAN SHIRLEY ANN SCHREINER YETMAN September 19, 1930 - May 27, 2013 Shirley S. Yetman, 82, of Annandale, VA a true southern lady, loving wife of William, only daughter of Olivia and Benjamin, best mother to Debbie and Ashley and adoring grandmother to Drew, Ben, Matt and Will died at home of cardiac arrest on May 27, Memorial Day. Shirley Ann was born September 19, 1930 in Greensboro, NC to Olivia and Benjamin. Shortly afterward the family moved to Norfolk, VA where she grew up. Shirley enjoyed dancing, horseback riding, sailing and spending time with her friends. In 1948, she graduated from Maury High School where she was a cheerleader with her life-long friends Joyce and Mickey. Shirley attended the College of William and Mary for two years. She headed north to Boston University where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree June 1953 in Mathematics. Upon graduation, Shirley returned to Norfolk and worked for the F. W. Dodge Corporation. As a construction news reporter she reported on the building construction taking place in the Tidewater Area. In the summer of 1953, on a blind date she met William. He described Shirley as a beauty and very smart, who smiled frequently and laughed often. In October of 1955 they married, followed by a honeymoon in Myrtle Beach. Together they lived in Norfolk; Monterey CA where their daughter Debbie was born; Long Beach CA; Springfield, VA where their daughter Ashley was born; Newport, RI; Mayport, FL; Annandale; Charleston, SC; back to Norfolk and then settling in Annandale. For many years Shirley was a busy mother and Navy wife. She worked as a substitute teacher in Charleston and in Fairfax, VA at W. T. Woodson High where both daughters graduated and later two grandsons. Her last job was in the Burke office of Long & Foster as a Real Estate Agent. She was a member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Burke, VA. Shirley was admired and loved. She was described as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend, who was easy to talk with, interested in others while not going on about herself and as having taught so many of us so much. Always a lover of animals and the environment, Shirley enjoyed bird watching, playing bridge, needlepoint, cross-stitch, working with stained glass, making quilts and sewing. Shirley was a very talented seamstress winning an award for original design from the Simplicity Pattern Company who turned her design into a pattern. In her later years she enjoyed spending time with her husband, daughters, grandsons and friends. Shirley loved her family and we loved her. We will always remember her as the most beautiful, intelligent, loving, caring, smiling, southern lady. Shirley is survived by her husband of 58 years, William R. Yetman; her daughters, Deborah Yetman Larsen of Annandale and Ashley Yetman of Arnold, MD; her grandsons, Drew and Matt Larsen and Ben and Will Laing. She was preceded in death by her parents Olivia and Benjamin Schreiner. To remember and celebrate Shirley's life a funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, July 19, 2013 in the Memorial Chapel on Ft. Myer in Arlington, VA. Guests should arrive early for the security check at the Hatfield Gate, located at 2nd St. South and Washington Blvd. in Arlington. ID is required for all those over 18.
