STEPHEN BLOOD Obituary

Dr. Stephen Douglas Blood  (Age 79)
Passed away at his home on Saturday, September 25, 2021 following a lengthy battle with inclusion body myositis. He was surrounded by his two surviving children and his wife of 45 years.A lifelong resident of Alexandria, VA, Steve was born on July 9,1942, the eldest of three children of Dr. Harold and Laura (Locke) Blood. He attended the University of Richmond and Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, MO, and held a residency in Portland, ME, before returning to Alexandria to join his father's medical practice in 1973. Stephen's greatest passions were treating patients, training new doctors, participating in Kiwanis and professional organizations, and worshipping at Trinity United Methodist Church. When not working he enjoyed the water most, sailing the Chesapeake Bay or swimming in the Atlantic with his family. Proximity to water signaled some of the few times he could be seen without his ever-present bow-tie.Dr. Blood is survived by his wife Connie; daughter Laura (Scott) Kaplan, son Christian (David Elkins) Blood; brother Fred (Michele) Blood, sister Susan Wilson; two loving grandsons, nieces, nephews, and extended family. Steve was preceded in death by his son, Stephen, Jr. A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, Alexandria, VA once it is safe to travel and gather. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. Stephen Blood Fund at the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, 2265 Kraft Drive, Blacksburg, VA 24060 or Trinity United Methodist Church.

Dearest Connie and family,
I remember Dr. Blood every day as I practice osteopathic medicine. I have taught students in my office just as he taught me for the last 15 years. Recently I went out into private practice and work part time teaching Osteopathic Manipulation in the lab at LMU DCOM in Tennessee. Although every time I would see Dr. Blood, I would tell him how positive an impact he had on my professional life. I had long planned on writing a letter explaining just how much. Although I see it´s been some years since his passing. I just want you to know his impact lives on in many of us!

I just purchased a 1960 Frances C. Hammond High School Yearbook, which I believe belonged to Stephen Blood. I was interested to know about its owner, and found this obituary. I'm posting on 9/12/2024, so this message may not be received, but in the event that a family member might like to have this yearbook, I'd be happy to pass it along. I am in Alexandria, and attended Hammond High school and was in the first class to attend TC Williams for academic year 1971-72. Please feel free to call/txt me: 703-786-5644. My condolences

Dr. Blood had hands from God. I remember that when I saw him once on a Sunday, I was totally blown away that he was even better than during the regular week appointments. I couldn't have imagined he could be even better than the regular sessions! They were perfect. I guess he was less busy and stressed on a Sunday. I miss Dr. Blood profoundly. He got me through so many hard times.

Connie, I'm so sorry to hear of Steve's death. One of the last times I saw him he'd begun to use a walker. It was unsettling. I thought 'What will he do now?" Turns out he taught the next day! On a number of occasions I've showed up at his office before hours. I did on my wedding day! He gave the adjustment to me as a wedding gift. I'm so fortunate to have had him in my life. With gratitude. Gretchen

Dear Connie, I was so saddened to hear that Dr. Blood passed. I learned about it this week from Dr. Andrew Lee. I called Dr. Blood's cell a few weeks ago to say hello and see how he was doing. I don't know if he had already passed. Dr. Blood had hands from God. He got me through many hard times. I am beyond appreciative that I was his patient for so many years. I offer deepest condolences over such a great loss for you, the family, and his many devoted patients. Most sincerely, Lynne Feingold

To Connie and the Blood family
So sadden to hear of the loss of my favorite doctor of 42 years and of a dear friend. To say that Dr. Blood had an exceptional talent with his ability to help patients in pain is an understatement. Those who were fortunate enough to have had him as their doctor know that he will be irreplaceable. Not only did he treat patients physically, but emotionally as well. He was the only doctor that when I left his office after a treatment, I always felt better than when I came in. One anecdote that I'd like to share was the time he offered to work on my fluffy white little Bichon Frisee named Goddard. Goddard had back surgery from a compressed disc so he suggested I bring him in one Sunday to see if he could help align him. After putting him up on the table, Dr. Blood buzzed his nurse and said he needed pictures. I assumed he was going to take x-rays, but when she came in with a camera, he explained he wanted to take photographs of him and Goddard for the Osteopathic newsletter. They both posed for the picture and we had a good laugh, one of many we shared over the last four decades. I will miss you and never forget you Dr. B. You were the best of the best!

We have such fond memories of our beloved Dr.Stephen.
Debbie was the file girl after school and was Stephen Jr´s and Laura´s babysitter at the beach.
Chris worked for the Blood´s and loved every minute of it. Lots of fun sailing on the bay with the family.
Rest In Peace dear Stephen. Love to Connie

First, our heartfelt sympathies to Mrs. Blood who showed such courage and commitment during Steve's long battle.

There was no finer person in our community than
Dr. Blood. His faith and love of family were so obvious to the many friends who knew him.
We'll always fondly remember our late afternoon
poolside chats about politics and events of the day.

Thoughts, prayers, and sympathies to the Blood family. May the Lord comfort you during this
time of sorrow.
