Stephen Haas Obituary

CONERSTONE OF THE WASHINGTON DC MEDICAL COMMUNITY AND PIONEER IN SPORTS MEDICINE

Dr. Stephen S. Haas, 84, a nationally recognized specialist in orthopedic surgery and pioneer in sports medicine, died February 23, 2024, in Washington, DC. The cause was renal cancer.

Dr. Haas and Dr. Carl MacCartee cofounded MacCartee & Haas, an orthopedic surgery practice, in 1975, which later became Washington Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. long regarded as the premier orthopedic and sports medicine practice serving the Washington, DC community. In addition to maintaining an active practice until his retirement in 2009, Dr. Haas was a clinical professor of orthopedics at George Washington University and a clinical instructor of orthopedics at Georgetown University. He chaired Sibley Memorial Hospital's department of orthopedic surgery from 1996-2006. He also was an orthopedic consultant to the White House medical staff for 16 years.

Dr. Haas was well regarded in professional and college sports as the team physician for the NBA's Washington Bullets/Wizards, the NHL's Washington Capitals, the gold medal-winning USA Olympic Basketball Team (1996), Georgetown University athletic teams, George Washington university athletic teams and the Washington Diplomats Professional Men's Soccer Team. He was a member of the Medical Council for the National Football League (2000-2006) and Venue Medical Director for World Cup Soccer in 1994. In retirement, Dr. Haas was medical director of the NFL Player Medical Benefits Plan.

Stephen Samuel Haas was born May 17, 1939, in Columbus, Ohio, to Joseph Haas and Elsie Haas.

His formative years were spent in Evansville, Indiana, where he excelled in academics and sports, including baseball and basketball. It was also in Evansville he developed what would become a lifetime passion for golf.

After graduating in 1961 from the University of Michigan with a degree in English, he attended the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, earning his MD in 1965. From 1965 to 1972, Dr. Haas completed his internship and residency in general and orthopedic surgery at George Washington University. During that period (1967-1969) he served as a flight surgeon in the US Air Force.

Family, friends and patients enjoyed Dr. Haas's wry sense of humor, and his seemingly endless supply of anecdotes from his career, including the time his work in the Air Force prompted President Lyndon B. Johnson to telephone Dr. Haas' surprised mother to thank her for raising "a great American!" In return, he cheerfully endured almost constant good-natured ribbing from his blended family.

Dr. Haas always loved working with his hands, whether it was performing surgery or designing and building an intricate model railroad or working on projects around the house. He had a sharp and curious mind, was a voracious reader and enjoyed traveling the world. In later years, he enjoyed visits to California and Georgia to visit his family and watch his grandchildren compete in sports. He had a special love for Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where he and his family spent many summers hiking, and winters skiing.

Dr. Haas is survived by his beloved wife of forty-four years, Barbara B. Haas of Washington, DC; brother Clifford Haas (Andrea), of Bellingham WA; daughter Lisa Haas (John Sullivan), of Los Angeles, CA; son Jason Haas (Claire), of Los Angeles; stepdaughter Adrienne Adelman (David), of San Juan Capistrano, CA; stepson David Walmsley (Jessica) of Atlanta, GA; and grandchildren, Zach Haas, Lukas Haas, Katherine Adelman, Jackson Adelman, Henry Walmsley and George Walmsley.

The family requests any memorial donations be made to City Kids Wilderness Project at citykidsdc.org.

The service will be scheduled for a later date.

Dr. Hass was my orthopedic surgeon when I lived in DC many years ago. Oddly, I had a dream about him last night which moved me to see if he had passed away. His kindness and wry sense of humor made him a great surgeon for ordinary folk and athletes alike. I will always remember him for his skill and "it´s not a big deal" manner and for the work he did on my foot and knee. My condolences to the family. I remember Barbara from Interior.

Steve a. Well known physican was a good friend and business associate. I was skiing and unfortunately had a skiing accident out west but rather being operated on by a physican where l had my accident l called Dr. Haas about my problem and he advised me to come in. I returned to DC and in the hospital l waited for the good Doctor. Well he entered my room but was on crutches, as he broken his ankle. A real confidence builder. Well he operated and a year later l was back on the ski slopes.

I will always have fond memories of Steve and his gracious if demanding support for his junior orthopedic resident. His thoughtful, professional and objective evaluation of complex issues as the medical director of the NFL Player Medical Benefits Plan was appreciated by all.

One of my mentors during my orthopedic residency at George Washington University from 1981 to 1985. A great orthopedic surgeon and more importantly a great guy! He will be missed

I was so saddened to hear of the passing of Dr Haas. He is the reason I am in Sports Medicine. I finished GW in 1989. Dr Hass was so generous with his time. I would rush back from our clinic to operate with him and he would tell me I could keep doing the arthroscopy till I messed up. When I finally completed my first case I was so happy that I had made him proud. I covered clinics with him and the GW basketgames so he and Dr McCartee could do the NBA and NHL games.

While applying to fellowships we had our first child and she was very sick from a heart condition. I withdrew from all my interviews to be with her and my wife and I didn´t know what the future held. Lauren improved (she now is married and has two children) and my desire to do a fellowship returned. Dr Hass contacted Dr Jeff Minkoff what was transitioning his fellowship from 6 months to one year and was delayed so it was the last fellowship available. Dr Hass out in good word for me and I did get the fellowship which was excellent. I will always be grateful and over the years thought of Dr Hass quite often. Dr Haas made a tru difference in my life.

Steve was a great teacher during my residency at GW. He never got mad at my mistakes, just guided me to a better way of doing things. We had a good time together in the OR, with 1 (or more) episodes of 5 Steves around the table: Attending, 2 Residents, Anaesthesiologist, and Scrub Tech!

My dear friend Steve Haas. In learning that you have completed your duty assignment here in this life, my heart is filled with sorrow for the loss your family and friends are feeling. But my heart is also filled with the joy of having known you and for being your friend. Thank you very much for that wonderful gift. Ron Cornelison

Darcy and I would like to spend our deepest sympathies to all of Steve's family. Steve was always more than perfect and I thoroughly enjoyed our golfing, medical and remodeling relationship. He will always be in my heart especially on the 18th hole where he always asked me how his underground home in the side of the hill of 18 was coming along? We wish you all the strength during this difficult time and know he will always be in our hearts and minds. Love John & Darcy Sekas

I am so sorry to hear this. I must have played golf with Steve over 100 times at RTJ. For a few years we played every Saturday morning when the weather was nice.

I truly enjoyed spending time with him. We chatted about many things- especially sports.

Such a wonderful person. He will be missed.

I was a client at McCartee and Haas at their inception many years ago. First with Dr. McCartee for a broken wrist (ice skating). The physician at the US Capitol recommended him. I then made the acquaintance of Dr. Haas when I slipped on wet grass. As the obituary notes, he was one of the finest and best orthopedic surgeons in the world. He put my badly shattered ankle back together in 1988 and I have never forgotten his kindness, compassion and expertise. I visited the WOSM last year and staff there told me that he still stopped in to visit, as recently as 2023.
