I have to say that I haven't been hit this hard by a loss of a peer before. I think I felt a kinship with Steve, in some ways, going back to Muir Junior High. We were in so many classes together continuing through high school. We shared academics, basketball and humor. Steve was also aspirational and inspirational to me. I aspired to match his academic and athletic abilities and the competitive side of me wanted to exceed them. Steve was such a positive barometer of success and achievement, while remaining so funny, personable and relatable.
I was blessed to be able to share playing basketball with him long after high school, in park leagues, with some other BHS teammates. Those were golden years as I got to share more of my classmates adult journeys.
In my last email exchange with Steve, last October, I heard that he was going to resume chemo, but I had no idea that exchange would be our last. Ironically, I had just recently started to read his novel "Life and Death on the Mormon Frontier", even though I acquired it right after he mentioned it in October. I had no idea, yet, that he had already passed. I was stunned to discover he had another novel published since! I guess I have some nice reading ahead and will certainly enjoy Steve's words and thoughts, in print.
Steve left quite a mark on the world and although we have all been robbed of more time with him, we will cherish the time we had.
