Susan Chang Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Susan "Sue" Chang, who passed away on February 11, 2025, at the age of 67, surrounded by her children. A brilliant mind, a dedicated leader, and a loving mother, Sue's influence will be felt for generations.

Born on November 29, 1957, in Queens, New York, to Ann and Al Mitchell, Sue was instilled with a strong work ethic and a deep love of learning. By 16, she had already embraced the value of hard work, taking on jobs such as toll supervisor at Robert Moses State Park, one of her beloved beaches on Long Island. She cherished family vacations in Saratoga Springs and ski trips to Okemo and Mount Snow, VT, where she later built a vacation home. Sue earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Applied Mathematics and began her career as a teacher in the Three Village School District before transitioning to telecommunications after moving to Virginia.

Sue's intellect and personable leadership propelled her to senior roles at Stanford Telecom, ITT Corporation, and Exelis, where she secured major NASA and Department of Defense (DoD) contracts. As Vice President and General Manager, she led a business unit specializing in space operations and radio frequency and spectrum engineering services for NASA, DoD, and other agencies. She later joined NASA, most recently serving as Director of Network Services, overseeing space communications and tracking operations critical to U.S. spaceflight missions. Sue was a distinguished member of the Senior Executive Service of the U.S. Government.

With over 40 years in business, engineering, telecommunications, and public service, Sue managed some of the most complex and large-scale programs in the history of space operations. Her colleagues remember her as a visionary leader and mentor who championed young engineers, many of whom credit her for shaping their careers.

Beyond her professional achievements, Sue was a devoted mother to Kellie and Ryan, always prioritizing her time with them, no matter how busy her career was. She loved traveling, with favorite destinations including Italy, Turkey, France, Spain, and Australia. She had a passion for shopping —especially shoes and purses— and enjoyed singing along to Fleetwood Mac, James Taylor, and America. Though she built her career in Virginia, her New York accent always returned when speaking with family.

Sue is survived by her children, her mother, and her sisters, Alison, Ann Marie, and Lynn, as well as many extended family members, colleagues, and friends who were touched by her warmth and wisdom.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 24, at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Luke's Catholic Church in McLean, VA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to WomenInAerospaceFoundation.org, an organization close to Sue's heart.

I had the pleasure of meeting Sue when she came to NASA, and she was truly a gem. I always admired her impeccable style and never missed a chance to compliment her on her beautiful bags and shoes. She was a true fashionista. Beyond that, she was incredibly smart, kind, and a joy to work with. I´m grateful for the time I had with her, and she will be deeply missed.

Kellie and Ryan,
My heart goes out to you both in your loss. I knew your Mom through work at NASA going back to the 90´s and worked closely with her in 2017 at NASA Headquarters. She was a pleasure to work with and knew the programmatic business side of the work better than anyone and was an outstanding communicator. I admired her bravery in facing her health struggles these past few years as she remained dedicated to her work. She helped enable 100´s of missions throughout her career ensuring their critical lifeline with their mission control centers. I will miss her and I hope that happy memories will help comfort you.

I knew Susan in her early years as a kid. We called our parents "Aunt" and "Uncle," though we weren´t blood relatives, but the bond we shared felt like family. Many of our best times together were spent skiing. I still wish I had a picture of the Ski Bums bus with our names painted on the side-piling in and heading upstate for a day on the slopes was always an adventure.

We also gathered for family get-togethers, where we had the chance to reconnect. I´ll always remember Susan´s carefree spirit and how much fun she was to be around. As life moved on, I caught glimpses of her journey through Facebook, but those early memories of laughter and adventure remain close to my heart.

To her family, my deepest condolences. You were truly blessed to have her in your lives.

Susan may have been a highly-regarded professional, but in her personal life she was one of the kindest, most generous people you could meet. She was wickedly funny, a great movie night companion, and had a great sense of style. May the spirit the OG SC live on whenever you look to the stars.

My heartfelt condolences. I have known Sue through my husband, Raafat Nasser, who worked for her. He thought very highly of her. In the few times I saw Sue, her demeanor was classy and her smile was comforting. She will be missed a great deal.

Kellie and Ryan, I worked for your incredible mother for ITT and Exelis. She was such a caring and innovative leader that truly cared about her team. We shared a special bond when we both went through a medical battle together. We became more then coworkers we became friends. Sue, you and that amazing shoe collection will forever be in my heart. Rest peacefully, my friend.
