SUZANNE KUSER Obituary

Suzanne D. Kuser "Sukie" (Age 89)
Died peacefully at her home in Washington, DC on July 13, 2021.  She was born on November 24, 1931 in New York City, the daughter of the late Vieva M. Perrin (nee: Fisher) and John Dryden Kuser. She graduated from Foxcroft School (Middleburg, Virginia) in 1949, where she also served for 19 years on the school's Board of Trustees and Bryn Mawr College (1953). She went to work for the National Security Agency (NSA) as a cryptologic linguist. She moved to the State Department, where she would spend the next 58 years. She studied national security affairs at the National War College in 1977 -- one of just seven women in a sea of men -- and eventually rose to be head of the U.S. State Department's Intelligence Reporting Division. After retiring in 1986, she continued as a part-time consultant and a senior reviewer of classified documents at the NSA. Kuser served on many other boards and councils over the years, often related to her passion for gardening and nature or her abiding interest in international relations. Her past service includes the Foreign Student Service Council, World Affairs Council, D.C., Institute of World Politics, McKee Botanical Garden, St. Johns Community Services, Blue Hill Library, Georgetown Symphony, the Friends of the National Arboretum, the former Columbia Hospital for Women, the National Tropical Botanical Garden, and the Foreign Student Service Council. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Sulgrave Club, the Chevy Chase Club, and the Order of St. John. Sukie was preceded in death by three sisters and a brother. She is survived by a large group of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Contributions may be made to Foxcroft School, 22407 Foxhound Lane, Middleburg, VA 20117 Services will be held on a future date.
