Thomas Blatnik Obituary

Thomas Hager Blatnik, of Leesburg, Virginia, formerly of Arlington, passed away unexpectedly on November 26, 2025. Son of the late Congressman John A. Blatnik (MN) and Gisela Hager Blatnik, Tom is survived by his sisters, Stephanie Foxwell (Harry) and Valerie Mallett (Robert), and his nephew, Nathan Sigel. He was born on February 10, 1957, in Washington, DC. After graduating from Curry College, he began a 37-year career on Capitol Hill where he held various positions under five Sergeants at Arms in the U.S. House of Representatives. Tom's extraordinary kindness, generosity, and warmth left a lasting impression on all who met him. He retired in 2024 and enjoyed his retirement and the new friends he made at Hessler Heights in Leesburg. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on January 7, at 11 a.m. at the National Presbyterian Church, Chapel of the Presidents, 4101 Nebraska Ave., NW. We met Tom years ago through a mutual friend who was "cat sitting" for us. Tom saved the day more than once to look after Smokey the Fat Cat when we were spending time at our beach place. He was a kind and very sweet young man whom we trusted to care for Smokey and look after our home in our absence. His sister Stephanie later took over the "Smokey" tasks. A great family, great youngsters and many memories of their dependable help. Their mother Gisela was lovely and shared in some of the humor that accompanied the care and feeding of Smokey. We are sending deepest sympathy on this shocking loss. Tom (like the family) was a classy, smart and wonderful person. I know he will be terribly missed. Sending love from Liz Beckmeier and family
