Thomas Fuchs Obituary

Dr. Thomas David Fuchs, 70, of Bethesda, Maryland, died at home on October 13, 2024, after a decades-long battle with cancer. He will forever be remembered for his extraordinary kindness and good sense of humor.
Born on October 21, 1953, in Washington, DC, Dr. Fuchs earned degrees from Duke University and the George Washington University School of Medicine. Following his residency in internal medicine in Boston, Dr. Fuchs spent most of his career working as an emergency physician at Reston Hospital Center in Reston, Virginia. After retiring in 2017, Dr. Fuchs continued providing medical advice and caring for people in need.
Outside of work, Dr. Fuchs cherished spending time with his wife of 31 years, Susan Launer, and their children, Zachary and Matthew; his family was his greatest source of pride. He loved sharing delicious home-cooked meals with them, as well as hiking and taking trips together. In recent years, Dr. Fuchs enjoyed traveling to Vermont and walking the family dog, Taco, around the neighborhood.
Dr. Fuchs was also an avid sports fan. He especially loved cheering for the Duke Blue Devils and attending games in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Dr. Fuchs possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of sports and entertainment, and he delighted in sharing quotes from movies and television. He was a masterful joke and storyteller, whose clever quips belied his quiet demeanor. He was often funny but never mean—Dr. Fuchs' kindness left a lasting impression on every person he encountered, even in his final days.
Dr. Fuchs was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Marvin Fuchs and Beatrice Fuchs, and his beloved older brothers, Dr. Daniel Fuchs and Jared Fuchs. He is survived by Susan, Zachary, and Matthew. He is also survived by his siblings, Deborah Cohen (Robert); Dr. Henry Fuchs (Lisa); and Dr. Ephraim Fuchs (Rima).
Dr. Fuchs was interred at King David Memorial Gardens on October 22, 2024. There will be a memorial service at Temple Sinai in Washington, DC, on November 18, 2024, at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to World Central Kitchen and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

I remember Tom as one of the most empathic and intelligent of physicians. It was not surprising to read that he was known for his sense of humor and kindness and that his life was full and well lived. It was certainly a privilege to have worked with him as a resident at Mt Auburn; he has left his mark.

I had the great pleasure of being in Tommy´s class at Whitman.
I played drums and had many great times with him in high school so many years ago. He played in all possible bands, marching, dance and orchestras.
He was an amazing state champion athlete as well. I was glad to have know Dan and spent lots of time at the house with them and their family.
So glad we got to see each other at Whitman´s 50 year reunion.
Rest in peace, Dr. Fuchs.

My deepest condolences to the family. I remember seeing his name show up in the ER at Reston Hospital and with one look at him it wasn´t hard to figure that he was one of the Fuchs boys from Kenwood Park. Of course he was way too young to know back when I was a teenager, and Jared was way older than me. But I knew Debbie well and met up with Danny in college, so we had a lot to discuss, including the facts that his father Marvin was a colleague of my father Ben, and practice partner for a time in DC with my mother´s cousin Lester Blumenthal. I´m glad I got to know Tom; he was a good doctor and a solid guy.

Tom was my friend as a young RN through our ER days. He opened my eyes to what a bagel was ! He was a brilliant MD to his patients. He had a fabulous dry sense of humor and a love for sports especially the beloved Celtics. After he went back home to DC , I was fortunate enough to see him again and meet his lovely wife Susan. He was on my prayer chain having asked so many of friends to pray for him when at the NIH. He will be missed by many that touched their hearts.

Tom was super smart and extremely dedicated to his family. He had a great sense of humor, was a huge sports fan and a had a life-long desire to meet others to learn about their lives.

He created a wonderful family with Susan and a successful career in emergency medicine. Tom loved his life and family and fought valiantly for them for the last two decades.

Bev and I loved him and miss him terribly.
