Thomas Madden Obituary

Lt. Col Thomas Madden, USAF, Retired, passed away at his home in Springfield, Virginia on February 21, 2025. He is survived by his sister, Mary Leigh, and his sons, Andrew, Sean, and Christopher. He will be interred at Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington, Vermont on August 16, 2025.
Thomas Madden was born in Albany, NY, in 1932. He attended the Cranwell School and graduated from the Perkiomen School and the College of the Holy Cross, where he honed his magnificent voice in the Glee Club. He joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Ramstein, Germany, when he met and married Florence Watson, also an Air Force officer. He also served at Sheppard Air Force Base; Dhahran, Saudi Arabia; the U.S. Embassy in Abidjan, Ivory Coast; the National Airborne Command Post at Andrews AFB; Bolling AFB; and in combat operations with the 834th Air Division in Cam Rahn Bay, Vietnam, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. After retiring from the Air Force, he had a second career as a civilian for the Department of the Army's Office of Legislative Liaison and the Military Police.
Thomas Madden was a devout Catholic, attending and volunteering his time at St. Bernadette Church for decades. He was a great supporter of the Boy Scouts of America. Besides raising three Eagle Scouts, he served as Treasurer for Troop 995 for 40 years. He had a remarkable ability to make friends with nearly everyone he encountered. Wherever he went, be it the Post Office, the dry cleaners, his bank branch … the people he met came to know him well and care for him, as he did for them. Thomas Madden's life was characterized by his service to others, to his country, to his church, and to his family. He is loved and missed - especially his hearty laugh! Service private.
