I had the opportunity to work with Tom on a couple of NCTM committees and on the NCTM Standards. Professionally, he was a delight to work with and always made significant contributions to discussions. His leadership in the mathematics profession has made the profession better.

As a professional friend, I had the pleasure of running with him and we even participated in a 5K race in Park City, Utah. When Tom and I would get a chance to talk at conferences, he would often mention how difficult it was to run that last mile uphill and at altitude. Tom will be missed. He was always caring and fun to be around.

Our prayers are with you and your family.

Tom will be missed. Thanks for sharing him with the mathematics education community.

Dear Sandra and Family,
Over the decades, Tom was a strong, soft-spoken leader who contributed in many ways to mathematics education. His publications will continue to carry his important ideas and recommendations for effective teaching. The members of NCTM and NCSM have been his fortunate colleagues as we learned from him in his presentations and writings.
I cherished his friendship in our professional work and will miss our correspondence and conversations.
With love and prayers,
Shirley Frye
