MOONEY
TIMOTHY JOSEPH MOONEY
It is with deep and profound sadness that we relay the death of our beloved brother Tim. He passed away on Sunday morning, July 9, 2023. After being diagnosed with cancer for the second time in January 2023 (the first in 2008), Tim bravely and with dignity, succumbed to pancreatic cancer. He was 68 years old. His life journey ended peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family with the support of his hospice caregivers at Capital Caring Health.
As luck would have it, Tim was born in Louisville, Kentucky on Derby Day, May 7, 1955, the middle child of Robert and Margaret Mooney. He leaves behind his oldest brother Patrick and wife Debbie; his younger sister Frances and husband Kevin; as well as two nieces (Teri and Caitlyn), and two nephews (Michael and Christopher).
A proud graduate of Georgetown University (1977), and a lifelong Washingtonian (but for a brief stint working in Chicago), Tim spent most of his professional life working in the fundraising fields of philanthropy and development raising money for children's charities. He worked for several charities in the DC area to include: Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Washington as Director of Philanthropy; MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Department of Pediatrics as Associate Administrator of Philanthropy; and finally, his last and most fulfilling positionâ€"truly a labor of love, Tim served as Director of Philanthropy at Sprout Therapeutic Riding and Education Center in Aldie, Virginiaâ€"a magical place near and dear to his heart! His home away from home!
Tim lived a full and happy life. Never married, he had a vast and amazing circle of friends. No doubt, he could teach a Master Class on friendshipâ€"whether you were in his orbit as kith or kin, he was a forever friend. For most folks, to know Tim was to love him. He was thoughtful, kind and incredibly funny. A tried and true extrovert, the man never shied away from a large speaking engagement, a microphone, a camera or a donut! Always the eternal optimist, he would see the positive in nearly everythingâ€"even an IRS audit. He wore his rose colored glasses true to the end! He was one of a kind, the real deal and we miss him dearly!
During Tim's cancer journey, so many friends and family eased our burden and grief and for that we are most grateful. All the prayers, cards, letters, stories, videos and treats provided by Tim's Caring Bridge followers raised all our spirits. We enjoyed reading the warm, funny and personal reflections from his cherished colleagues and friends. It gave us a renewed appreciation of the kind and loving person our brother was and the legacy he has left behind. Thank you for your unwavering love and support during our difficult path. Your kindness, compassion and friendship will not be forgotten.
There will be a private, Catholic family mass celebrated for Tim at a later date as well as his inurnment at the family plot at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Washington, DC. In honoring Tim's wishes and in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Sprout Therapeutic Riding and Education Center, P.O. Box 8, Aldie, VA, 20105 or online at
