TUU-JYI CHAI Obituary

Dr. Tuu-jyi Chai passed away Monday, January 14, 2019, at the age of 82 in Yangon, Myanmar. His wife, Karen Ken-tsu Chai predeceased him in 2011. He is survived by his three children: Alice Chai Hung, Dr. Toby Chai, and Amelie Chai, and their spouses: Thomas Hung, Amy Fogelstrom Chai, and Stephen Zawmoe Shwe, and seven grandchildren: Elliott, Nicholas and Brian Hung; Nathan and Hannah Chai; Kiran and Lotus Shwe. He is also survived by four siblings: Dr. Ping-fu Tsai, Chin-yi Lee Tsai, Pao-chu Su Tsai, and Hsin-hua Tsai.

Dr. Chai was a Professor at the University of Maryland, Center for Environmental and Estuarine Studies where he performed research, mentored and taught students in seafood science. From 1995-1998, he was the Dean of the College of Fisheries Science at the National Taiwan Ocean University in Keelung, Taiwan. He lived the last eight years with his daughter Amelie in Myanmar. Dr. Chai will be remembered and missed by family, colleagues, students and friends in Taiwan, United States, and Myanmar. A memorial service for Dr. Chai will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Haight Funeral Home in Sykesville, Maryland followed by burial at Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Marriottsville, Maryland, where he will be laid to rest next to his wife, Karen.
