I hope that members of Virginia's family will see this late message. I was a middle school student of hers, taking a physics class in 8th grade. I was cleaning out some old boxes of mine and ran across my yearbook with her signature. I had always remembered her as an inspiring teacher and as I grew older, and became a lawyer when few women were in the profession, I realized how even more inspiring she was as a scientist. I looked for information about her and saw this obituary. I would like her family to know what she meant to me and probably many other of her students.

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy and sincere condolences to the family. Virginia was a pillar in the community and her commitment, enthusiasm and persistence were to be admired. We will keep the family in our prayers,

Tribute to Virginia Lee Major (1940-2020)
To the family of Virginia Lee Major (and especially to Susie Major Harris--the best sister anybody could ever hope to have), we, the members of the St. Clare Walker High School Class of 1957 (nicknamed The Hazels after that tumultuous hurricane of that era) and the Middlesex County, VA community that she loved so much, are deeply sadden by her passing. As her oldest friends, we remember her fondly as a conscientious honor student, class officer, member of Newspaper and Yearbook staffs and so much more; remember her as a long time caregiver to both parents in her Washington, DC home; remember her as the proud new mama of Sabrina; we remember her from our Urbanna Oyster Festival, class reunion and other social gathering days; and we remember her for her revolutionary work in both her Washington, DC community and her Middlesex Co, VA hometown community (especially with the development of an elderly housing complex in which she was a financial partner for many years).
Virginia was an amazing person who will be always in our hearts. Rest in peace our friend.

My prayers and sympathy are with you. I met Virginia at Park Southern Apts. in SE Washington in the seventies where we both had apartments.
Virginia came to my wedding. She was a lovely dignified intelligent woman.. May she rest in heavenly peace.
