Walter Porteous Obituary
PORTEOUS WALTER A. PORTEOUS Walter A. Porteous, age 87, of Clearwater, FL, passed away February 7, 2011, at his home. Born in Canada, his parents brought him to Canton, NY when he was six months old, where he lived until he was drafted in 1943, despite being a Canadian Citizen at the time. He became a U.S. citizen while in the service and served on B-24's in WWII as a gunner and radio operator. He flew missions over Germany and Poland from his base in Italy. For close to 20 years he joined his former crew members every two years for a reunion. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Accounting and spent the next 30 years working for the Treasury Department in Washington, DC. As Deputy Assistant Commissioner, Comptroller, he received several Treasury Awards for "outstanding professional competence and sustained executive leadership, including an award for the important role he played in reorganizing the Bureau's Audit staff and strengthening internal audit activities." Everyone who knew him thought of Walt as a family man of great integrity and honesty and a true gentleman. For many years, Walt was a snowbird, living six months in Springfield, VA and six months in Clearwater, FL, but for the past three years he and his wife have lived in Florida year round. He enjoyed traveling with his family; he had visited most states, including Alaska and Hawaii. He also made many trips to Canada and Europe. He was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Dunedin, FL and a former member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Alexandria, VA. Walt's first wife, Ida, died in 1990. He married Joyce Dain in 1994. He is survived by his wife, Joyce, Clearwater, FL; daughter, Patti Hack, Corona, CA; his son, Stanley Porteous, Palm Springs, CA; two grandchildren, Denise Hack and Eric Hack, Corona, CA; two step-children, Robert Dain, Reston, VA; Chere Dain-Marlo, Greenwood, IN, four step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; sister, Doris Adair, Tampa, FL; and the following nieces and nephews; Carolyn Emery, Riverview, FL, Joe Adair, Walker, LA, Allan Adair, Rochester, MN, Claudia Lattner, Wilmington, NC, Sandy Clark, Canton, NY, Barbara Kline, Cortland, NY, Mary Jean Shepard, Clearwater, FL and Jan Kulikowsky, Cortland, NY. Visitation at 1 p.m., service at 2 p.m., Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at DEMAINE FUNERAL HOME, 5308 Backlick Rd., Springfield, VA 22151. Interment to follow in Fairfax Memorial Park.
