WALTER SCHOELLKOPF Obituary

WALTER HORTON SCHOELLKOPF, III
Walter Horton "Shelly" Schoellkopf III, age 72 passed away peacefully at his home in Basalt, Colorado on July 25, 2017. He was the eldest son of Walter Horton Jr. and Eleanor Flood Schoellkopf. He was born March 13, 1945 in Beirut, Lebanon where his father was an officer in the US Foreign Service. When his parents moved to Washington, DC, he attended Beauvoir School and graduated from Saint Albans School in 1963. He also attended Saint Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire. He built hot rods in his grandmother's garage with his car club, The Monarchs. He was an early master of the electric guitar and his band The New Breed were well received. He was an expert photographer in the darkroom as well as behind the camera. He combined his love of music and cars by opening the first car stereo store in the Washington area, Auto Fidelity Inc. An avid skier and horseman, he moved in 1975 to Colorado, where he was often seen driving his horse-drawn sleigh through Aspen. He is survived by a sister, Anna Schoellkopf Lacher of Aiken, South Carolina; a brother, Henry Flood Schoellkopf of Bethesda, Maryland; two nephews, David Flood Lacher of Aiken, South Carolina and Peter Graham Lacher of Columbia, South Carolina; two great-nephews, Maddox Lacher and Lennox Lacher of Columbia, South Carolina and his long time companion, Nancy Collins. I have been thinking of Shelly for years, and am so sad I didn't act on those thoughts way, way earlier. My heart broke when his obituary was the result of my Google search. Shelly was a dear, fun friend, a gentle soul I knew from The Apple Pie in Georgetown, before he moved to Colorado. I loved spending time with him at his beautiful home in Potomac. The world lost a beautiful person. God speed.

I always sent him two Birthday Cards which made him laugh. We went to the Universal Studios tour and my fathers Uncle, Sydney Solow got us both a VIP pass so we did not have to wait in line. Shelly knew how to have a good time and he made everyone happy where ever he went. A true gentleman that loved to laugh.

Shelly has come to mind so many times since I last saw him in the 70s. Remembering hanging out at his home in Potomac. A free spirit, a great talent, and great fun. Sorry I did not look him up when he popped into my mind and heart. Too late now...
