William D. Scates Obituary

Even as a youngster, William D. Scates was honing his skills to someday become a soldier. He was a Boy Scout, rising to Eagle Scout, and he also was a member of the Young Marines and the Explorers. "When he was a little boy," said Moreana Whitson, his mother, "he was always drawing pictures of soldiers. That's all he ever wanted to be." Scates, 31, of Oklahoma City, was killed Aug. 11 by a bomb blast in Arab Jabour. He was assigned to Fort Stewart and was on his third tour in Iraq. Whitson said the same instinct to be protective of his two sisters when he was a boy drove Scates to protect his country as an adult. "He always felt a sense of duty," Whitson said. "He was a hero to all of us." He joined the Army National Guard and later enlisted in the active Army. "He knew how dangerous it was," Whitson said. "He was a little afraid this time. He kind of had a feeling that he might not make it back this time, but he was a brave guy and he loved his country," Whitson said. He also is survived by his wife, Raquel, and two daughters, Jade, 9, and 7-month-old Kendra.

I knew Scates in High school we lived right around the block from each other. We were good friends and after we graduated we both enlisted. I stayed active duty while he bounced between active and guard. The last time I seen him was about a year before I went to Iraq at the national guard unit I started my career at. We again parted ways again hoping to see each other again. While I went and deployed and made it back with a Purple Heart and when I got out I remember picking up the paper and seeing that Scates was gone. I am sorry that he is gone and wish we would run into each other again.

I was searching the web tonight, trying to think of my next tattoo and I have decided that I am going to have a tribute to you cousin, I think of you every day and miss you so much it hurts. I had a baby girl 3 months after you left us and I named her after you, Her name is Dani. I noticed some one added a picture of her on here. She is a character you would have had fun with her. Thinking of you and missing you always.

The flag is flying in the sky
A daily reminder of who and why
We sit here remembering them today
These heroes that now lie in their grave.

While here on earth, the bravest ones
A soldier, a mother, a daughter, a son
The father's who went far off to war
To ensure our safety and so much more

To keep our children happy and free,
Someone must do this job, you see
So, today remember the soldiers who served,
Because this is one thing they truly deserve.

The loved one's that they have left behind,
The Gold Star mothers, like your and mine
We honor them proudly, every day
Our American Soldier...Proud and Brave
By Shannon Williams-Austill

I want to thank this soldier for their sacrifice.
And, I wish to extend my deepest regards to the loved ones they have left behind. Their service to our nation, has not gone unnoticed. They are our heroes, who paid the ultimate price for us, and that is something that every American needs to be reminded of and remember everyday.
The freedom we all have, we have because of brave young men and women who made a choice to defend and serve.
Today, let me remember your loved one with you.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know William, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Danny my brother, my best friend, I think about you everyday, I miss you so much! I love you. I hope you can see how hard I am trying in College I remember our last conversation was about me getting a degree I know how much you wanted me to do so. I just wish you could be here but when I graduate here in maybe four or five years however long it takes I know you will be there and will be very proud of me. I know you are watching over me. I just wish I would of treated the last time I saw you as the last which it was, but how could I have known or anybody for that matter but I hope you still know how much I love you and how proud I will always be of you. And I will get that degree not only for you but for myself thanks for inspiring me.

I met Sgt. Scates on only 2 occasions. One on the day my granddaughter was born, he came in the hospital looking for PFC Matthew Poole. As we all talked that day, Sgt Scates noticed that my son's newborn daughter had already scratched her face. He told us all that he thought they had some newborn mittens at home and he would check and bring them back to us if he or his wife could locate them. The next day, he showed up with the mittens. What a wonderful heart this young man had. Thank you Sgt Scates. Thank you.

Heavenly Father

The Soldiers I lift up to You in prayer.

Send multitudes of Angels to shield them with their wings, to cover and protect them from unknown danger evil brings

Make their vision razor sharp, so the enemy, they will see.

Make them swift, and light upon their feet, so the enemy, they will defeat.

Lift their spirits and their hearts, and the burdens that they carry, and give their tired bodies rest, so that they will be at their best.

Replenish all their needs, whatever they may be, and fill their hearts with songs of praise that gives them comfort for dark long days.

Send each Soldier a Guardian Angel to whisper in their ear , how much they are loved and admired for the battles that they fight, and bring them safely to their homes when Freedom ends the Fight.

Amen

Danny was an Eagle Scout from Boy Scout Troop 186 in Oklahoma City. My two boys were members of the troop during that time and grieve with me in the world's loss. Danny's Eagle Court of Honor was the first I had ever attended as a Boy Scout adult member and it truly was a memorable one. Danny bestowed honor on his family and our troop with his service to our country. He will be remembered and missed. I truly want to offer my condolences to your family for your loss..I know it doesn't always help to hear he was Hero..but when he decided to serve our country and take the risks that is more than many young men are willing to do.
We are blessed to have these young men (and women) to be brave and fighting everyday. You gave our country a very fine and brave young man~~
I thank him for what he has risked and given for all of us.
My family knows your pain all too well..we know how devastating it is to get the news about our precious loved ones. A few short weeks ago we, too, shared your experience when our loved one Sgt Ryan Wood died in Iraq.
They will all be with us forever..and loved forever.
May God bless you and be with you each day. We are thinking of you and so sorry for your loss.

"Baby sister," "Bubble-butt," "Potatoe Head." These were just a few of the names I heard so often growing up from my big brother. Wow - reading this guestbook really validates and puts into perspective how many people loved and respected my brother. It makes me smile to see that so many others truly knew who Danny was.

There are so many things I could share about my brother. He taught me how to be bad as a toddler, he then tortured me as a child, and later treated me as his best friend. But as long as I can remember, he was always protecting me.

Words will never describe the amount of shock and pain that I felt last Saturday when 2 men in uniform stood in my living room telling me that my big brother was gone. I think my knees still hurt from hitting the floor.

But I know that he is safe now and finally at peace.

Danny you rock - I miss you so much already, and I hope that God has made you a Colonel in his army - you deserve it! I love you.

Danny was born March 8, 1976 and died August 11, 2007. He was 31 years old. He died doing what he loved, serving his Country. He is our Hero, never to be forgotten and forever in our hearts. He leaves behind a beautiful wife, Raquel, and two precious daughters, Jade who is 9, and Kendra who is 7 months.

Danny had a big heart and loved his family very much. He was always reaching out to all his family wherever they might be, he did not let distance stand in the way.

Danny expressed his fear to me before he went back this last time, that he felt like he was'nt coming back. He was afraid of never seeing any of his family again, and even though fear accompanied him, he stood, he fought, he protected, knowing that each moment might be his last. Danny was brave, courageous, and strong, a soldier from the moment he was born, a hero to us all.

I love you Danny, I am going to miss you tremendously.

THE HERO IN YOU
You came into this world
So small, so new,
Little did I know,
The Hero in You.
You grew into a boy
So fearless, so bright,
So full of courage,
So full of might.
Willing to protect,
Whatever the cost,
Innocence you lost.
Protecting your mother,
Your sister too,
That was the Hero,
Growing in You.

You grew into a man
So tall, so true,
How well I knew,
The Hero in You.
Ready for battle,
Willing to die,
Fighting for freedom,
Under one Big Sky.
So strong, so brave,
So full of heart,
A Soldier right from the start.
Protecting your Country,
The Red, White, and Blue.
That’s the Hero,
God created in You.

Dear Ones: In reading these beautiful tributes to our hero, Daniel, I've had feelings of envy. We were blessed to know Daniel after he came to El Paso & met Raquel. All of you, though, knew him for much longer. You knew the boy, the child, the young man - you saw him go thru his life's challenges and come out a loving, responsible man, a great husband, a terrific father and a man who was focused. Daniel has touched us all in different ways & at different times, but he has left his footprints on our hearts & lives and we shall remember him always...

Dan,

I called you boy, I called you A Scout, I called you an Eagle, I called you a Soldier, and I called you a man; but the thing that made me the prouest of all was to call you my son, and the day you called me "Dad".

I will remember that as a Scout you cared about others, which was evidenced with your choice of Eagle Scout Project of "bringing awareness of the Infant Crisis Center and the needs of the Women Infants & Childrens Programs to the Public" which laid the groundwork of how you thought and wanted to care for others. Your leadership as a Ptrol Leader looking out for the "little guys" carried on into your manhood as a career NCO and leader of men in the U.S. Army.

You walked the tgoughest of paths, overcame your mistakes, and did your best to practice the true meaning of the "Scouts Oath and Scout Law" You were and have always "been prepared", been there to "do a good turn daily", and served your Country well.

You are at your last call of duty, continue to watch over us as you always have, Stand at ease! It's time for you to rest. I'll catch you later.

Love always, Dad.

I met Dan through my good friend Eric Rust during our childhood years. I remember seeing Dan at some of the post 1 meetings I attended and a few times just hanging out with Eric and Dan at Eric's house. I always liked Dan we all shared a common bond together, with our plans and goals to become soldiers. Well we all did, but Dan much longer than the rest of us and like a true patriot and hero Dan made the ultimate sacrifice for us all to protect this great nation. Dan you make all of us and America proud. Hooah soldier, job well done! You will be loved and missed by all. We will dine together someday at the great feast together at the Lord's table on the other side my brother.

With Love,

I didnt know Danny but I do know his family and I am so appreciative of everything he and other soldiers have done for our country. They are the true heros. This poem that describes greatly how I feel and I wanted to share it with his family and friends. Thank you. Thank you for keeping us safe.

Fallen Hero

You shall never be forgotten
for though you may be gone from this world.
Your spirit will live forever.
It lives in the laughing eyes of children
who are free from want and oppression.
It lives in the bravery and conviction
of those who still struggle for liberty.
And it lives in me for I promise
to cherish every breath of freedom
that you paid the ultimate price to secure.
I ask that only i might be granted some
small fraction of your courage and strength
to face the challenges of my life with an
honor and dignity worth your legacy.
May you rest in eternal peace
safe in the knowledge that your sacrifice
was not made in vain.

May You Rest In Peace.

I can't find the word to express my feelings. I have known Danny since he was born.He loved life and always wanted to do the right thing.I will be praying for his family and friends. I am finding comfort knowing that there is another Angel in heaven that I know.

August 16, 2007

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

I've known Dan for quite a long time. Sometimes it seemed he spent more time at my house than he did at his own (he didn't really). Dan was one of my best friends in the whole world. We'd do almost anything for eachother. He's one of the folks that I was sure I could count on no matter what. He even helped me put down the tile in my kitchen when I had only owned my house for mere hours.

Dan epitomized what I felt it was to be a member of the US Army. Througout the years, he and I would go back and forth as to which was better: a Soldier or a Marine. It was always good natured.

I'm proud that we were friends. I'm sad that he's gone. I'm even more concerned for his wife and his daughters.

Dan was a brother to me. We have lost one of the finest human beings I have ever had the pleasure to know.

Staff Sgt. Willicam Scates & Family:

Know in your heart that you are a true hero and will never be forgotten. All gave some, some gave all. Rest in peace. You will be missed by everyone’s life you have touched.

To the family, as the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life’s routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family, friends, and all Americans for the sacrifice of one of your family members for our freedom. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May you find comfort in the loving embrace of our Heavenly Father.

I meet Dan through Boy Scouts as an Adult Leader I watched him progress as an Eagle Scout. Dan invited me to his Eagle Enstalation, to date the best one I have been to. Dan later enlisted in the Army and was in the infintry. We were very proud of him. There are not enough words to exspress my sorrow upon hearing about his death. Dan was an honorable man, a good son, a good father and a good husband. He was a good soildier, good leader, who took care of his men and will be missed.

Dan and I met in Middle School and as a member of a Military Family, I knew he was destiny was to become an excellent leader and member of the Army (it was just in him). Later as a fellow service member, I would occasionally hear of his dedication and loyalty to this Country and all those who served.

I was found of thinking how well he was doing in the Service and that is was well deserved. All of us that knew him, knew that he was doing what he felt was his life's calling. The pictures of him wearing his Uniform so proudly gave that validation.

He was a loyal/selfless person and that was proved in his last mission leading his fellow enlisted. While all of us leave this earth eventually, it is still hard to accept when our friends, family and co-workers must leave without the chance of saying goodbye.

Though it has been years Dan since we were last able to speak, thank you for staying stead fast and making us all proud to of known you. You will be missed here and a void will be felt.

Dan was a very good man. He and I met and became friends at Webster Middle School in the seventh grade. He wanted to be a soldier and made no secret about it.

Dan was heavily involved in the Boy Scouts. He was also an Explorer Scout in what used to be Post 1. I have many memories of Dan while at Post 1 campouts, survival outings, and normal meetings. We would play war games, do community service work, recruit new members and just have a good time. Dan pretended to be serious, but was quite the jokester. When it was time to work, he would roll his sleeves up and help get-r-done.

Dan was a very good friend. When he was living in El Paso I would drive out to visit him from Fort Hood. Dan was the kind of guy you could just hang out with. He genuinely cared about other people and it showed. The last time we got to visit in person was about four or five years ago in Oklahoma City when he was still in the Oklahoma National Guard. Between tours we would visit on the phone. Occasionally, I would send him a book to read, and he would send it back after he was done reading it.

Other than being an excellent soldier, Dan was also an excellent father. He thought highly of his family and spoke often of them when we talked on the phone.

Dan, we missed you when you were on your deployments, and we will miss you even more on your final mission. See you on the other side, brother.
