William Hines Obituary
HINES WILLIAM J. HINES William Joseph "Bill" Hines of Sarasota, Florida and Washington, DC, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2010, at the Inn at the Sarasota Bay Club in Sarasota, Florida. The cause of death was complications due to stomach cancer. Mr. Hines was born on November 27, 1923, in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Edward Raymond Hines and Nina (Leahy) Hines. He attended St. Ambrose High School in Davenport, Iowa, and in 1943, he married Janice Sersig in Moline, Illinois. In 1940, Mr. Hines began college at USC, majoring in engineering. His college career was interrupted by the Second World War. He enlisted as a Naval Aviator and later in the United States Marine Corps. Mr. Hines served as a Marine Corps pilot in the Pacific theater, seeing action in Tinian, Iwo Jima and the battle of Midway. He was on his way to Japan on an aircraft-carrier, when the war ended. After the war, Mr. Hines graduated from the Law School of Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois, in 1949. After practicing law in the Quad-Cities area for four years and serving as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Illinois, Mr. Hines was recalled for the Korean War. Following the end of the Korean War, in 1954, Captain Hines made a life-changing decision to move with his family to Manhattan Beach, California, where he was employed by North American Aviation in Canoga Park, California. In 1957, North American Aviation sent Mr. Hines to Washington, DC, where he opened the first Washington, DC office of North American Aviation's Rocketdyne Division. Mr. Hines remained in Washington for forty-two years. During that time, he and Rocketdyne were heavily involved in NASA's space program. Mr. Hines served as president of the National Space Club in 1968. In the 1980's, after retiring as an Executive Vice-president from what had then become Rockwell International, Mr. Hines and two colleagues founded the firm of Wagner, Hines and Avary, from which Mr. Hines retired in 1995. In 1999, Mr. Hines and his wife moved to Boca Grande, Florida. Not long thereafter, they relocated to Sarasota, where they resided at the Sarasota Bay Club. His beloved wife Janice predeceased him in December of 2006. Mr. Hines is survived by three daughters: Suzanne Hines (Siegel), an attorney in New Buffalo, Michigan: Sara Hines (O'Donnell), a professor of Special Education at Hunter College in New York, New York; and Melissa Hines (Green), a professor of Neuroscience at Cambridge University in Cambridge, England. He is also survived by five grandchildren: William Joseph Emanuel of Conifer, Colorado; Margaret Emanuel Przeklasa of Huntley, IL; Robert J. Emanuel of Chicago, IL; Madeline O'Donnell of Washington, DC; and Adam Hines-Green of London and Cambridge, England. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren. A memorial service for William Hines will be held in Sarasota FL, to be followed by interment in Arlington National Cemetery.
