As I move toward the second anniversary of my kind, sweet, loving bonus mom I find comfort and confidence that you´re watching over our.family. Take a victory lap and rest. It´s hard to imagine a love greater than the Holy Spirit and certainly the mom who carried and first loved me. Yes my momma immediately and without hesitation knew her cub would be safe in your care. Lord know it wasn´t easy raising a king. Zora, I´ll see you again. It gets better over time.. love Eddie ( Missing you)

My warmest condolences to Zora Martin Felton's family and friends. I am slow with this note because I just learned of her passing. I am so sorry for your loss of your wonderful mother, grandmother and friend. Join you in mourning the passing of this wonderfully caring, vibrant pioneer and community leader. Like thousands of others, I was blessed to be touched by and taught by her. I had the great good fortune of having a college work placement at the Southeast Neighborhood House in 1963 where my supervisor was Zora Martin. She was such an amazingly wise and graceful boss; I learned so much from her about values of social justice, how to be effective and get things done, and community dynamics. She helped to shape my career path and I am eternally grateful for her infectious, life-affirming presence. I would like to join Zora's extraordinary community in saluting her life of courage, love, professional innovation, and lasting positive impacts on countless people. The world is a better place because so many of us carry some of Zora's values, community spirit, and uniquely graceful way of living.

ZORA MARTIN FELTON: Making the Inaccessible Accessible
"Softness, gentleness, and dignity" are rare these days. We have been blessed to know these exemplar qualities still exist and are found within my mentor and friend, Zora Martin Felton. For many years it was my practice to stop by and pay homage to her and Dr. Kinard whenever I came home. The Anacostia Museum was a "safe haven" for many during those tumultuous years of the late 1960´s. Zora nurtured creative young Black artists and opened opportunities for cultural expression and collaboration when many were still questioning the validity of Black Art and/or the legacies of the Black Family. Zora softly, gently, and with dignity responded through her actions and support by making ways out of no ways.
Beginning at the old Anacostia Museum in DC and culminating with our morning tea and phone chit chats in Silver Spring, MD., we both found solace and humor in remembering those days. As an educator, Zora set the standards for community museum outreach that relied on the Spirit of collecting, preserving, and protecting African American artifacts. More than self-promotion and ambitious career moves, she created knowledgeable curators from homemakers, regular folks, and children. She built confidence and reassured many of us who were committed to excellence because we saw her do it, and with her soft and gentle dignity, we knew we could do it too!
I will miss our morning tea chit chats but will continue to pull from the many resources she has given me through books, conversations, and memories. God will welcome her, as many of her family and dear friends bid her a physical Bon Voyage. We celebrate the life of this "Virtuous Woman" who will keep us setting the standards of softness, gentleness, and dignity as we remember the goodness within all of us, because of her. Amen.
