Mr Frank Jones was really an uncommon man--reading much history, being drawn to such things as sociopolitical issues. With the New Orleans-Katrina disaster he had much to say.
Maybe the story that best expresses who he was--what he was all about--is that of him "making the team." Picked by a team of the old Negro Baseball League, he was despite his small stature, told to play the toughest field position there was, the "hot corner," 3rd base. It was a boyhood dream realized, disturbed only by a small conflict--WWII. He got drafted. Coming out of the war, he married, becoming a father with responsibilities, still thinking the "yes" of what could have been, yet never complaining--never making his family feel like a certain burden. It was only in 2005 did this 87-year-old admit to his baseball prospects. A heavy admission in looking back, since for most of his working life he held down two jobs, to the approval of only a small circle of fans.
He exchanged his field of dreams for a wife and 4 children, and never second-guessed. Maybe it's best to describe him as the ordinary guy we've known, who stretched to do uncommon things.
Goodbye, Mr Jones, it was my good fortune to have known you.

To my dad,
A wonderful and loving man, but even a greater father, I love you and miss you everyday. I know you're playing ball for God in the "Hot Corner". I will be strong and continue your legacy of strength and compassion. I hope to start the Frank L. Jones humanitarian project in your honor, so kids can realize their dreams like you tried to do. Batter up.
Love you always,
Yolonda
