MICHAEL NOVAK
Michael (Mike) Novak and I first met at a picnic at Sheraden Park, Pittsburgh, PA. The picnic was sponsored by the local parents of Holy Cross seminarians. It was in the summer of 1951. Earlier that spring, both Michael and my eldest brother, Jack, graduated from Holy Cross Seminary at the University of Notre Dame. My first impression as a 14 year-old: Mike had an unusual agility in fielding a softball. I was hitting the ball as hard as I could into the center field of Sheraden Park. Mike fielded the ball and in mid-stride flipped it sidearm back to the plate. Later, I learned that the year-round sports at Holy Cross were at least partially responsible for this ability.
Mike was down to earth. Even then, his spontaneity in discussion--arguing may better describe itwas a trait that said: like me, he comes from a large family.
My next meeting with Mike was in Rome in 1957*. At that time he was Mr. Michael Novak, CSC (Congregation of Holy Cross) and had taken his temporary vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience. By this time two events had occurred that brought Mike and me together, again. Mike, still the (humble) seminarian, was attending studies at the Collegio di Santa Croce. Two years earlier, in 1955, I had graduated from Holy Cross as well. But, tired of a strict study discipline at the seminary, I decided to join the U.S. Navy.
Off and on, over the years, Mike and I remained in touch. As I recall, I typically initiated the contact, always with some question or concern. Many years ago, I had sent him the photos of our meeting in Rome. He called to thank me, and mentioned that he had forwarded them on to Stonehill College archives. I said, Mike, did you even make a copy? He responded, I remember them vividly.
Mike consistently came across as the same down-to-earth, easy to talk to guy. And each time was a learning experience. Michael was always the teacher. I chose to sit back and remain the student. For example, in 2011, I sent him the essay* on our meeting in Rome. He edited the essay, I'm sure, and finally corrected my Italian spelling of the College of Holy Cross. He didn't bring up the photos accompanying the essay, the same ones I had sent to him so many years earlier! I'll miss Michael Novak.

It is with sincere fondness, admiration and respect that I remember Michael. In the funeral Liturgy of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church, we pray O Christ God, with the saints, grant rest to the soul of your servant, in a place where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing, but everlasting life.
