Janet Caroline (Busch) Wefel, 66, of Plainfield, Iowa, passed away early Friday morning, November 1, 2024, at UnityPoint Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.
Janet was born on February 14, 1958, in Waverly, Iowa, the eldest child to Marvel Elner (Nerge) and the late Lowell Hugo Busch. She was baptized on March 23, 1958, at Peace United Church of Christ, Waverly. She was confirmed on March 26, 1972, at St. John's Crane Creek Church, Tripoli. Janet graduated from Tripoli High School in 1976, and later graduated from Hawkeye Tech. On August 15, 1981, Janet was united in marriage to Mike Wefel at St. John's Crane Creek Church, Tripoli. She found enjoyment working alongside her husband on the family farm, and working as a personal banker at First National Bank in Plainfield
Janet lived her life with joy, kindness, optimism, strong faith, and a smile that could light up a room. Her most treasured times were spent as a wife, daughter, mother, sister, and grandmother all of which were roles she cherished beyond measure. She outperformed all of us in each role, leaving a lasting impact on our lives and our hearts. She did innumerable big things and little things, all with perfection and joy. She guided us through triumph, illness, heartbreak, and success; supported her grandchildren like another parent; and did many little but treasurable things like sewing baby blankets, baby bibs, Halloween costumes, cheerleading skirts, and beautiful Christmas dresses for her daughters. She was an avid wrestling fan to her son and brothers. Janet loved and found great reward sharing her talents of cooking and baking with her family, friends, and neighbors. She was ever-ready to selflessly devote her time and attention to anyone in need by sharing one of her many exemplary dishes or baked goods. Janet loved to entertain, she had great enthusiasm and put much care into holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, card club parties, fish fries, pancake parties, bridal showers, and baby showers. Above all, Janet cherished every moment with her loving husband, Mike, whether it was farming, traveling, making maple syrup, visiting with their children, or making memories with their grandchildren.
Janet was a faithful member of First United Church of Christ Pleasant Valley, where she served on several committees and taught Sunday School. Janet's strong Christian faith led her from the beginning to the end of her courageous fight against cancer. She never expressed how bad of a day she was having, she knew God had her here on earth to make someone else's day better and that is what she strived to do. Janet's family and friends will greatly miss her words of encouragement, thoughtful advice, generous heart, and never-ending love.
Janet is survived by her loving husband, Mike; four children, DeAnn (Anthony) Nixt of Waverly, Desa (Albert) Lambert of Cedar Falls, Dana (Joe) Van Otegham of Victor, and Curtis Wefel of Clarksville; four grandchildren, Isaac Nixt, Alana Nixt, Blake Van Otegham, and Kannen Van Otegham; her mother, Marvel Busch of Tripoli; six siblings, Janis (Richard) Haight of Waterloo, Jenise (Brian) Mauer of Denver, Julene (Derwin) Mauer of Independence, Duane (Tammy) Busch of Tripoli, Dale (Jody) Busch of Waverly, and Lowell (Cathy) Busch of Sumner; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Lowell Busch, and grandparents, Chris and Caroline Busch and Albert and Caroline Nerge. Janet will be buried with a pillow she made out of her grandmother's funeral ribbons along with a beautiful white Bible gifted to her from her loving family.
