Becky Chambers Obituary

Becky Peterson Chambers

November 23, 1950 - June 6, 2025

Becky Peterson Chambers of Jacksonville, FL, was born on November 23, 1950, in Waterloo, IA and departed this earth unexpectedly on June 6, 2025. She was predeceased by her parents, Russell Harold Peterson and Amy (Saucer) Peterson and two sisters, Connie and Patty. She is survived by her husband Michael (aka her "Boyfriend"), daughter Laura Atkins (Billy), grandchildren (Cassie, Quin, Aubrey, and Kate), siblings (Ray, Steve, Rich, Carmel, Annette, David, Kim, and Dennis), and Uncle Donnie.

Becky's motto was "we are placed on this earth to help others." She lived by it through sending cards of caring, meals, gifts, and flowers to anyone needing encouragement, consolation, or support.

While attending high school, Becky worked in the kitchen of a nursing home where she met and took a fancy to Michael, the janitor. After graduating college, she made him the happiest man in the world by accepting his proposal of marriage. For 51 years, their love for each other was unconditional. Together, they had a daughter Laura who added to the joy of their lives.

Becky earned a degree in education from Central Christian College in McPherson, KS and Greenville University in Greenville, IL. For over 20 years, Becky taught students at low-income serving schools in Joliet, IL. She loved those children as if they were her own. She poured her heart into teaching focused on both caring and fun. Becky started a meal program for her students who often arrived at school hungry, but she was threatened with dismissal by the school's administrators because feeding hungry children was "not time on task." Becky got around that by having the kids eat cereal at their desks while doing their morning lessons.

Becky was a member of Christ United Methodist Church of Neptune Beach, FL where she enjoyed activities such as their annual pumpkin patch and women's circles. She was also a founding member of the unofficial friend group CCL (Crazy Church Ladies). The CCL laughed and cried together in support of one another.

Becky's favorite thing was spending time with her grandchildren. Known to them as "Nanny," she cheered them on, mended their clothes, baked them treats, and always said yes to planting more crops in the garden.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her, but her legacy of kindness and caring lives on with those whose lives she touched in myriad positive ways. Becky is no longer suffering with pain and is at peace with her creator.

Becky's life will be celebrated on June 28, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. EDT at her church (400 Penman Rd, Neptune Beach, FL) and will be live streamed via the Church's Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@christunitedmethodistchurc5774/streams. The video will appear on the "Live" section once the stream begins about 20 minutes before the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Caring Cabinet Donations where Joliet Central High School students can get school supplies, healthy snacks, personal care, and hygiene items for free. I believe Kindred Spirits know each other before they are born and then spend a lifetime seeking each other according to the plan of our Great Creator. Albeit our time together has been short, there will be no good-byes or farewells, only Godspeed my friend `til our path joins again, and until such time, please know I´ll be thinking of you.

My sympathy and thoughts to Becky´s immediate family and to all those who lives were made a little bit better by the kindness and care from Becky.
I worked with Becky at that nursing home. We were in cahoots together in fun in that kitchen, for sure. However, if a client was rehabbed and sent back to their apt etc, Becky and I would visit and make sure that person was able to continue to live alone. We often attended funerals of some of the individuals that took a shine to us!
I also remember the little flirtations and immediate interest Becky had in seeing Mike. After both of us graduated high school we went our separate ways. I moved out of state but continued to get the local Waterloo news. I saw the wedding notice of Becky and Mike.
This sad but heartwarming obituary tells a story of love and kindness and perhaps what life is truly all about!
It gives me joy to know that The beauty of red/haired Becky will continue to live on and make the lives of others and the world, a better place.
Thank you Becky.

My Dear Becky, you were my Person. we were Cousins but as close as sisters. We shared many amazing times together. Becky could be a friend to anyone who had the pleasure of meeting her. She was kind and generous to all. Becky began calling me Squirrel on one of our crazy trips to Las Vegas "the reason will stay between us" and I would refer to her as Bucky. We shared many belly busting laughs together. My dear dear Becky words can not express my sorrow. You will be so dearly missed by myself and all who love you, and all whose lives you touched.. It's so hard to think that that this is goodbye You will forever be my partner in crime.
Goodbye my dear dear Becky, remember I will always love you the most.
As long as I breath you will be remembered.
