Fred Richard Junker
October 24, 1934 - June 8, 2024
DAVENPORT - Fred Richard Junker passed away with his family at his side on June 8, 2024, after a brief illness in Davenport, Iowa. Fred was born on October 24, 1934, in Greene, Iowa to Grace and Tony Junker. He graduated from Greene High School in 1952. After high school, Fred served in the military where he was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. After an honorable discharge, Fred married the late Judy Fritze in 1960 and they had four children. Fred spent his career in farming, working at a milk dairy, construction and finally in maintenance at IBP. He retired in 1998 and enjoyed a long and happy retirement near his family. What Fred treasured most in life was spending time with his family. His children, grandchildren and great children brought "Papa" so much joy. His other joy, besides stock car racing, was attending and watching his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes including the 1958 Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. On his 80th birthday, he got an Iowa Hawkeye tattoo and is being buried in his #22 t-shirt! Fred, also known as "Old Man", will be missed by many. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend and person.
Fred is survived by his four children: Jacky Duffy (Kevin, special friend) Davenport, Brad Junker (Leanne) Eldridge, Julie Crockett (Kevin) Iowa City and Brent Junker (Nichole) Blue Grass, grandchildren, Sara (Kevin) Kehe, Andy (Coty) Lekin, Adam Lekin, Tyler (Samantha) Junker, Jessica Morton (Grant), Kevin Junker, Trevor Junker, Patty (Matt) Van Portfliet, Eddie Junker; 15 great grandchildren, and sister Punkie Palmer.
A very special thank you to Veterans Affairs for helping Fred for the last few years and to Genesis Hospital, especially Lorie, who cared for him like he was her own father.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to Quad Cities Veterans Outreach Center, 4515 N. Fairmount St., Davenport, IA 52806.
A graveside funeral will be held on Saturday, June 15 at 11:00 a.m. at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens in Cedar Falls and all family and friends are welcome to celebrate Fred's life. Fred's family invites you to celebrate his life at Peppers Grill & Sports Pub, Cedar Falls, following the burial. Attendees are encouraged to wear Iowa Hawkeye gear to celebrate Fred's love for the Hawkeyes!
