Virginia Holder Obituary

Virginia A. Holder

October 10, 1927 - May 12, 2025

Virginia A. Holder, 97, of Waterloo, died Monday, May 12, 2025, at NorthCrest Specialty Care in Waterloo.

She was born October 10, 1927, in Waukon, Iowa, the daughter of Theodore and Cora Evenrud Kirkeby. She married Roger Holder on August 13, 1951, in Decorah, Iowa. He preceded her in death on August 3, 1997.

Virginia graduated from Decorah High School in 1945. She was a bookkeeper at Darling Drugstore in Decorah until her marriage. Then she stayed home to take care of her family. Virginia was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and later Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Waterloo.

Virginia loved her family and friends, including the Cutler Street gang, the street where she had lived for almost 70 years. In her younger years, she enjoyed riding her bike (she still had her childhood bike!) and fishing. She developed her lifelong interest in flowers, plants, and gardening while growing up on the farm. She loved roses the most. Spring was her favorite time of year because of all the beautiful blooming trees. Last spring she was still planting flowers and tomatoes with assistance. Some of her other hobbies and interests included reading the Bible, making rugs, crocheting blankets, and going to antique stores and flea markets, especially to look for decorative plates! In recent years, she enjoyed watching the Andy Griffith Show, Rick Steves, Daniel O'Donnell, Lawrence Welk, and most westerns, especially Gunsmoke. Anytime she would see Casablanca or Raiders of the Lost Ark on TV she would be sure to watch!

Virginia's favorite treat was ice cream. She especially enjoyed lots of shakes during her last weeks while staying at NorthCrest. Next time you have ice cream think of her!

Survived by her daughter, Melinda Meyne of Cedar Falls; her grandchildren, Seth (Lynn) Meyne of Hubert, NC and Samuel Meyne of Arlington, VA; and her former son-in-law, David Meyne of Cedar Falls.

Preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

There will be a public visitation on Tuesday, May 20th, in the mausoleum at Mount Olivet Cemetery from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. A graveside service will take place immediately following. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street will be assisting the family with arrangements.

Thank you to everyone for all the prayers, flowers, cards, calls, and visits. Special thanks to Mike Peppler for his kindness and extra assistance.

Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Bend Humane Society, the Northeast Iowa Food Bank, or Queen of Peace Catholic Church.
