William E. "Bill" Herdahl

William E. "Bill" Herdahl, 83, of Cedar Falls, died on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at NewAldaya Lifescapes in Cedar Falls.
He was born August 16, 1942, in Baldwin, WI, the son of Erwin and Isla (Scheel) Herdahl. He graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1960. He served in the United States Army from 1961-1964 and later spent a few years in the reserves.
Bill married Valerie K. Wittenburg on October 16, 1965, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Readlyn.
He worked at John Deere for 30 years, retiring in 2002 as an Instrumentation Test Mechanic.
Bill was a member of UAW Local 838. He was a reserve sheriff's deputy for Black Hawk County for many years and went on the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. on May 22, 2018.
He enjoyed spending time on the river at their cabin in Prairie du Chien for almost 30 years. He liked to go fishing and spending time on the water. He also enjoyed target shooting, hunting, and playing cards. He attended many of his grandchildren's sporting events and loved his dogs.
Bill is survived by his wife, Valerie Herdahl of Cedar Falls; two children, Terrence (Jane) Herdahl of Terre Haute, IN, and Tawnie (Mark) Lavallee of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren, Alexis (Karthar) Galanti, Hunter Lavallee, Talen Lavallee, and Deidre Herdahl; two great-grandchildren, Cortlyn and Palmer Galanti; a brother, Richard (Karen) Herdahl of Castle Rock, CO; a sister, Cheryl (James) Anderson of Cedar Falls; two nieces and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a great-grandson, Walker Galanti; Valerie's parents, Leo and Lucinda Wittenburg; and a sister-in-law, Crystal Taber.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Avenue, Waterloo. Inurnment to follow at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Readlyn where military rites will be conducted by the Iowa Army National Guard and the Waverly Area Veterans Post. Visitation for one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the family. Condolences may be left at
