Thurman O'Neal Smith, a cherished husband, a devoted father, a beloved grandfather, and a steadfast friend, passed away on Sunday, October 5, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on May 28, 1942, in the gentle embrace of Lawrence County, Alabama, Thurman dedicated his life to his family and his community.
Thurman cherished his fifty-three years of marriage to his wife, Mary Jane Smith. Together, they built a family marked by love and support. Thurman is survived by his devoted children: Bobby Smith (Barbara), Suzanne Mooney (Brian), Karen Millwood (Ricky), Evan Smith (Kim), Johnny Smith (Rachel), and Misty Vilardi (Robert). He was proud to be a grandfather, known affectionately as "PawPaw," to his grandchildren: Bobby Smith, Jr. (Tiffany), Amy Smith Waits, Cody Smith, Alexis Smith Speegle (Michael), Christine Smith, Victoria Smith, Catherine Smith, Ezra Smith, Ethan Smith, Julian Vilardi, Lillian "BooBoo" Vilardi and Dominic Vilardi. He also leaves behind several great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who benefited from his kindness and generous spirit.
Thurman is preceded in death by his esteemed parents, Ed and Alma Fannie C. Smith, and a brother, Cooper Smith, whose loss remains felt within the family.
Thurman's career began on the farm, where he found joy and purpose. It was not until later that he retired from the town of Notasulga, after many years of dedicated work there. Beyond his professional endeavors, he was known for his mechanical skills with cars and tractors, reflecting his resourceful and hands-on nature. He was an active member of Grace Baptist Church in Auburn, Alabama.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 9, 2025, from 10:00 AM until service time at 11:00 AM at Jeffcoat Funeral Home Chapel in Tallassee, Alabama. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Notasulga, Alabama. The family welcomes all who wish to honor Thurman’s life and legacy during this time of remembrance.
