Daniel Martin Obituary
Daniel "Dan" Jude Martin, 75, of Souderton, PA, formerly of Quakertown, PA, and Cranston, RI, passed away on Monday, April 28, 2025 at Grand View Hospital.
Dan was the loving husband of Ann L. Sorensen for 12 years. He was Dad to Eric, Mikaela, and Brooke, "GPD" (Grandpa Dan) to Kyle, Ashlee, and Avery, and Great Grandpa to Sterling. Dan was born in Providence, RI, to the late John F. Martin and the late Virginia R. (Conlen) Martin, and was big brother to Michele and Christine.
Dan was energetic, active, and high impact. He had a great sense of humor; he was witty, loved jokes, and his laugh was absolutely contagious. He was driven, fiercely independent, ambitious, and always willing to work hard and hustle. What Dan will mostly be remembered for, however, is the enthusiasm, curiosity, and passion he had for life and the world around him. He was a lifelong learner and athlete, always trying a new hobby, participating in a sport, joining a club or organization, taking a class, planning a trip, or tinkering on a project.
He was an avid bicyclist, who rode bikes for nearly 60 years. He competed in road and track races as a young man, pulled his kids around the neighborhood in "the bugger" with his bike, and enjoyed taking in both new and familiar scenery from two wheels. He was deeply connected to nature, and especially to water. Growing up in the "Ocean State," he loved swimming in the surf, sailing, and investigating tide pools. As an adult, he shared his love for water with his family, making sure summer camping trips were centered around visits to beaches, waterfalls, and rivers. He learned fly-fishing, scuba diving, and loved spending summer afternoons at the community pool. Dan became an avid kayaker, happy to go on whitewater adventures all over the world or enjoy a relaxing paddle along the banks of local lakes, looking for wildlife.
Dan also enjoyed live music, dancing, gardening, cooking, baking, bird watching, traveling, taking classes, reading, photography, and visiting museums. He always had a home repair or woodworking project in-progress, and liked building things and making crafts with the kids in his life. As a child and teen, he excelled at baseball, ice hockey, and soccer; and, as an adult he enjoyed going to the gym, played badminton, practiced yoga, learned how to cross-country ski, and even went dog sledding once. Dan was passionate about being an active participant in life. He not only wanted to do it ALL, he wanted his friends and family to join in on the fun and adventures he was having, no matter how big or small.
Dan graduated from St. Andrew's School in Barrington, RI, class of 1969. He attended the Community College of RI, Roger Williams University, and Wentworth Institute of Technology. After school, he took a job in PA working as a mechanical engineer for the former Pennfield Engineering in Quakertown. He was then a self-employed mechanical engineer doing business as ASDEC, Inc. in Quakertown and Souderton for over 40 years. During this time, he worked for multiple engineering firms, machine shops, and manufacturers. He also worked seasonally as a river guide for Pocono Whitewater in Jim Thorpe, PA. In his semi-retirement, he completed a Culinary Arts Program at Montgomery County Community College and worked as a baker's assistant for Bakers on Broad in Souderton, PA. Dan was also a member of the Perseverance Fire Company in Souderton, PA, for several years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two daughters, Mikaela Danielle Martin of Souderton, PA, and Brooke E. Martin of Pottstown, PA; his two grandsons, Kyle J. Martin and wife, Kayla, of High Springs, FL, and Avery Cain of Telford, PA; his granddaughter, Ashlee L. Holmes of Dade City, FL; his great-grandson, Sterling W. Martin of High Springs, FL; his two sisters, Michele L. Tomasso of Cranston, RI, and Christine A. Bobowiec and husband, Paul, of Fairfax, VA.
In addition to his parents, Dan was predeceased in death by his son, Eric J. Martin.
