Donald Messer Obituary

Donald H. Messer, Jr., 84, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, in Country Meadows, Green Pond Road, Bethlehem. Born at home on Green Pond Road, Palmer Township, on October 14, 1940, he was the son of the late Donald H. Messer, Sr. and Myra J. (Wamsley) Messer. He graduated from Wilson High School, Class of 1958 and attended Rider University. Donald was also a graduate of Greater Pittsburgh Guild for the Blind. After completing their program, he worked at Lehigh County Courthouse where he ran the food service cafeteria. Later, he managed food service at Martin Guitar for many years. He courageously navigated complete blindness, living independently for over 42 years. Don maintained a quick wit and solid sense of humor…his humor was his forte that brightened every one of his dark days. Donald loved listening to music while enjoying a good cigar. He was an avid Penn State fan. He was a 77-year member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Easton. Donald leaves behind two daughters, Jill J. Messer, of Allentown and Suzanne Cobb, of Gainesville, GA; a son, Donald Messer, of Easton; two grandchildren, Evan and Julia Cobb, both of Gainesville, GA and a dear and loyal friend, Raymond Walters, of Easton. He was predeceased by a brother, John A. Messer and a sister, Gloria Ann Messer. As per Donald's wishes, there will be no services at this time. Interment will be held privately in Northampton Memorial Shrine. A memorial service will be announced at a later date to be held in his church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Strunk Funeral Home, Inc., Wilson Borough. Offer online condolences at www.strunkfh.com. Memorial gifts may be made to Sights for Hope, 845 Wyoming Street, Allentown, PA 18103.

You were my Hero. Never meet someone quite like you. Living on your own blind for over 40 years and could prepare a salad
Restaurant style was amazing.
Also doing all your household chores and cooking for your self
Total fascinating. I will never forget all those grocery shopping adventures with you and Jill and the fantastic lunches you took us on. Not to mention the beautiful Christmas´s spent with you and Raymond and Uncle jack.
I love you and will
Miss you to the Moon and back.
You were an amazing man and I am so happy to have had you in my life.

I had the privilege of knowing Don from working at the Lehigh County Courthouse where, every day, he was so cheerful, friendly and welcoming to everyone. Many years later, I met and worked with his daughter, Jill, who shared those same qualities. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. May Don rest in heavenly peace now.

It was an honor to know such a courageous man. I knew Uncle Don my entire life and remember when he lost his sight. He never complained about being blind and had an infectious laugh and a great sense of humor. You will be missed!
