Elizabeth Mooney Obituary

Elizabeth Mary Mooney (nee Barry), of East Norriton, formerly of NYC, passed away on March 21, 2025 at the age of 78 after a long battle with lung disease. Born October 6, 1946 to the late James Jerome and Mary Elizabeth (nee Moran) Barry, Elizabeth was the beloved wife of Michael Mooney (53 years); loving mother of Maureen Maerten (Michael), and Kevin Mooney; cherished grandmother of Shannon, Katelyn, and Kerrigan; and dear sister of Jim Barry, and Phillip Barry. Born and raised in Manhattan, Elizabeth was a proud New Yorker and went back often to visit after moving to Pennsylvania in 2008 to be closer to her daughter and granddaughters. First and foremost, Elizabeth was a mother and a grandmother. She wanted nothing more than to give her children the best life she could and to be an important part of her granddaughters' lives. She created fond memories for her children going to Long Beach for days in the sun, the train museum in Connecticut, and local playgrounds in Flushing, NY where she raised her family. Elizabeth was especially devoted to her son, Kevin, ensuring he had the resources he needed growing up, and continuing to support him daily through phone calls and advice until just before her passing. Elizabeth was the proudest grandmother and just adored her three granddaughters. When Shannon, the eldest, was born, Elizabeth waited in the hospital waiting room all day and night until Shannon was born after 2am. Her first response was "Oh, it's a Girl!" Elizabeth was part of every important event in their lives until her health made it too difficult. The love and memories she leaves behind will be remembered forever. Friendship was everything to Elizabeth. She put a great deal of effort into keeping in touch with friends through the years. This included friends from high school and her younger years, her days in Flushing having tea with friends or walking together to the laundromat with a baby stroller and a shopping cart full of clothes, her coworkers from the elementary school kitchen where she worked and her newer friends in Pennsylvania who included the bus driver she routinely talked to while on her daily travels to go shopping or the YMCA water aerobics class. If she lost contact with someone, Elizabeth would search endlessly to find them again. She cared deeply for each of her friends and never forgot them through the years. Relatives and friends are invited to Elizabeth's Life Celebration on Monday, March 31, 2025 from 10 to 10:50 AM, followed by her funeral mass at 11 AM at St. Helena Church of Blue Bell, 1489 Dekalb Pike, Blue Bell, PA 19422; interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Lung Association. In loving memory of my cousin Elizabeth Mooney. She was a big part of my life since I was a little girl. She was always there for me and gave me good advice. I loved her and will miss her. May she rest in peace.

This picture Elizabeth had sent to me. It was Christmas 1985. She wrote Santa Claus was Jim. Then it was her with Maureen, Kevin, and Colleen.

I met Elizabeth in New York when I moved there, and we met at the Salvation Army residence back in 1969 or 1970. We quickly became friends even after she moved to an apartment. After I moved to Michigan, we stayed in contact by phone or letters and cards. I was able to meet up with her and her daughter on a visit to New York with my husband and daughters. She always wanted to visit me here in Michigan but unfortunately, that didn't happen. I will miss you and think of you often. Sending prayers and hugs to the family.
