James Stanley Shaup March 22, 1937 - January 1, 2025
Delano, Pennsylvania - James S. Shaup (Jim/Cuzzy/Dad/Pappy) passed away peacefully at Lehigh Valley Hospital Hazleton surrounded by his family on January 1, 2025 at the age of 87.
Born March 22, 1937 at Ashland State Hospital, son of the late Stanley Shaup and Christine Flaim Shaup. Jim graduated from Mahanoy Township High School in 1955 and enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was stationed at Sampson AFB, NY, Ellsworth AFB SD, and
Vandenberg AFB Lompoc, CA. He performed reconnaissance missions and training in Alaska, Europe and Asia during the height of the Cold War. After an honorable discharge in 1959 Jim attended McCann School of Business in Mahanoy City and obtained the equivalent of an associates degree in Business and Accounting. Upon completion Jim became one of the original employees of John Walson, the founder of Cable television and HBO. He began as a lineman and ended his career at Service Electric in upper management. After retirement Jim worked for Sony Engineering and Manufacturing Corporation in Delano.
Jim was a lifetime member and Eucharistic Minister of St. Canicus and subsequently Saint Teresa of Calcutta Catholic churches in Mahanoy City. He was the Sexton at the Delano branch, Holy Child Chapel until its closure. He served for many years as a member of Men of Marian Catholic High School. Jim was a lifelong active member of The American Legion, the Delano Fire Company and Bears Head Sportsmen's Association. Jim was elected for numerous terms as a Delano township supervisor and delighted his own and the town children by plowing snow banks for ideal snow fort construction. He ensured the maintenance of the local parks, the baseball diamond and was instrumental in the construction of local basketball courts.
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Terri. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Renate Pawelek Shaup; daughters Dagmar Wilson and husband Nigel of Boalsburg, PA; grandchildren Tristan (Kimberly Glass), Kedrin, and Savannah; Karen Tempest, granddaughters Tabitha McKean (Shawn), Felicia Crane, and great granddaughters Aubrey and Avery McKean of Boalsburg, PA; Pamela Miller and husband Jim of Barnesville, PA; grandchildren Chelsea Shaup and great grandson Daniel Gonzalez and Jordan Black (Erin); son James Shaup of Barnesville and grandsons Jacob Shaup (Alyssa), and Joshua Shaup; daughter Krista Shaup, grandchildren Alexis Striegel (Cody), Hunter Fisher and great grandsons Nicholas and Tyler Striegel; brother Louis Shaup (Joy) of Alta Loma, CA.
Jim's greatest joy in retirement was spending time with family and he was enamored with the company of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a lifelong historian and photojournalist of Delano, named for Warren Delano, maternal grandfather of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He meticulously documented the railroad and coal mining history of Schuylkill County and Lehigh Valley. He passed his love for and collection of model trains to his grandchildren. Jim was lovingly known as "Cuzzy" as his extended family included his mother Christine Flaim's ten siblings and his father Stanley's "Jiggs" three siblings and their extended large families.
Jim's celebration of life services will include a viewing at Lamar Christ Funeral Home in Hometown on Thursday January 9 from 6-8PM and at Saint Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church Mahanoy City 9-10AM on Friday January 10 followed by mass at 10AM. Interment will follow at the Christ Church (White Church) cemetery in Barnesville.
