Kenneth Klabunde Obituary

Kenneth L. Klabunde, 76, of Easton, PA, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 3, 2025, at his home. Born May 21, 1949, in Easton, PA, he was the son of the late Fred A. and Margaret E. "Marge" (Blauch) Klabunde. He and his loving wife, Barbara H. (Panzini) Klabunde, celebrated 49 years of marriage on August 14, 2025. Kenneth was a 1967 graduate of Easton Area High School and went on to attend Churchman's Business School in Easton. In the early 1970's, he toured nationally as a follow spot operator with Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians. He continued to run follow spot for many concerts and shows at Stabler Arena throughout the 1980's. Kenneth was the manager of the historic State Theatre in Easton and The Movies in Hellertown for 14 years. He was instrumental in starting Friends of the State, which helped save the beautiful theater from an uncertain end. He was also the man who found that the theater was haunted by Fred J. Osterstock, whom the Freddy awards are named after. Later, Kenneth worked in public relations for Macintyre Management Corporation, representing local McDonald's restaurants, and most recently, for Stowaway Storage. A lifelong enthusiast of theater organs and Rolls-Royce automobiles, Kenneth also devoted countless hours to researching local history. He especially enjoyed spending time in the Marx Room of the Easton Area Public Library and sharing his knowledge through presentations on the history of the State Theatre. Kenneth will be remembered for his deep love of Easton, his storytelling, and his dedication to preserving local culture and history. Surviving in addition to his loving wife, Barbara, are his daughters, Amy Klabunde-Youngs and her husband Doug, of Middle River, MD and Laura Klabunde, of Easton; two brothers, Scott Klabunde and his wife Denise, of Palmer Township and Bruce Klabunde and his wife Kathy, of Wilson Borough; nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11am Monday, October 13th in the Strunk Funeral Home, Inc., 2101 Northampton Street, Wilson Borough. Call Monday, October 13th from 10-11am in the funeral home. Offer online condolences at www.strunkfh.com. Memorial gifts may be made to the State Theatre, 453 Northampton Street, Easton, PA 18042 or Henry F. Marx Room Endowment Fund, c/o Easton Public Library, 515 Church Street, Easton, PA 18042. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Kenneth L. Klabunde, please visit our Tree Store.

Oh my, my dear friend and collaborator Ken! A fine man indeed! Gone from us way too soon. How so many of us appreciated his love of historic Easton, his recollection of any Easton downtown history from decades past and present. His writings and dedication for the printing of his phenomenal Seville/Boyd Theater book. He told me this year that he was completing his creative photo and narrative book regarding the history of the 1926 Historic State Theatre, the fabulous theatre he was so instrumental in saving and promoting his Vision for the theatre. Ken´s positive Spirit lives on with Barb and his family, in Easton, with many of us who loved him and perhaps now in the State Theatre. Godspeed my friend Ken. Sincerely, Phil Mitman, Easton.

Growing up, I always felt I was a lucky child. Ken, Scott and Bruce lived next door to my grandparents. It was like having three brothers. Ken was the oldest so I was often the recipient of many of his clothes as he outgrew them. We were both avid readers and he got me hooked on "Hardy Boys" mysteries in my early youth. Sadly, Easton has lost one of its truly great historians. Ken understood and worked diligently to be a keeper and protector of city history. His books and comprehensive knowledge of the theaters in Easton were a true gift. Sitting on Scott´s back deck and talking with him was something to look forward to each time I visited. I can only imagine the conversations he will now have with friends such as the late Jean McClay and Dick Fox. Rest in peace Ken. You were taken from us too soon!

Over the years, when he´d stop by Aardvark Graphics, we enjoyed the stories Ken would tell us of Easton´s history and his encounters with Fred at the State Theater. He was a great guy. Our sincere condolences to the Klabunde family.

To Mrs Klabunde, children, and extended families, brothers Scott and Bruce, I am sorry to hear of Kenny´s passing, but extremely pleased to learn of all the endeavors that Kenny was involved with, since we graduated in 1967. Kenny´s memory will live on through his endeavors and Easton is surely a better place because of Kenny. I am proud to say I knew him.
