Susan Baurkot Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our cherished matriarch, Susan "Sanna" Baurkot of Palmer Township, who left us peacefully on July 30, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on October 2, 1937 in Easton, PA, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Margaret (Unis) Baurkot. Sanna was a guiding light in our family, radiating wisdom, strength, and generosity. Her legacy lives on in the values she instilled, the stories she shared, and the generations she nurtured. Sanna grew up on 4th Street in downtown Easton surrounded by her beloved Lebanese community. She graduated from Easton Catholic High School, class of 1956. Sanna was employed as a secretary for U.S. Congressmen, Francis "Tad" Walters and Frederick B. Rooney, Jr. She was then employed by the U.S. Postal Service of the Lehigh Valley as the secretary to the plant manager and retired in 2005. Sanna was a devoted member of Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church. Sanna is survived by her brothers, Samuel Baurkot and Raymond Baurkot, Jr.; her nieces and nephews from the Baurkot family: Mary Sue, George, Danny, Bobby, and David; Suzie, Raymond John, Johnny, Margaret, and Dina; Raymond III, Camille, and Louie; and Samuel Jr. and Herta - as well as her nieces and nephews from the Kassis family: Nancy, Eva, Arthur, and Abe. She is also survived by Joe Kassis, who was like a brother to her, along with so many cousins, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Sanna was preceded in death by her brothers, George and Unis Baurkot; the love of her life of 55 years, Peter Kassis; her best friend, Barbara Kassis; and her beloved Goddaughter, Jeanette Kassis. Calling hours will be held on Monday, August 4, 2025 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM in Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church, 4th and Ferry Streets, Easton, PA. Prayer of the Incense will be held at 8:00 PM. An additional calling hour will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2025 from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM in the church followed by Divine Liturgy at 10:00 AM. Interment will take place in Gethsemane Cemetery, Palmer Twp. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Sanna's name to Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church, 55 South 4th Street, Easton, PA 18042. I personally did not Sanna, her father and my grandfather John T Vitale were close friends. As a boy I remember going with my grandfather to visit her father at his beer distributorship.
May her memory forever be a blessing.

Our late congressman, Francis Walter, had a knack for recruiting congressional staffers from Northampton County. Many of his selections continued to serve Congress for many years beyond his 1962 death. Sanna Baurkot was one of those public servants who continued for many years to achieve the expectations of her bosses and their constituents. Sanna often found herself as the last hope to a forgotten citizen in overcoming a complex government bureaucracy to satisfy a critical personal need. Fred Rooney recognized her unique abilities and often noted that she was indispensable to his efforts. I was fortunate to have worked with Sanna and witness her unique qualities . My sympathies to the Baurkot family and to Easton“s Lebanese community. Her life was a treasure to many.

Our hearts are heavy and broken by this sad news. Thank you for all you did for all of us, all those years. I'll always cherish our trip to our village in Lebanon in 1968, when I was 11 years old and you were a young woman, along with so many others. How many times we reminisced about that trip each summer. We're truly going to miss you, ya Sanna. You were the Matriarch and Heartbeat of our Easton Lebanese Community and your loss is huge to all of us. Rest in Eternal Peace and May Perpetual Light Shine upon you. They don't make people like you, anymore. Those days are long gone.
