Verna Detweiler Obituary
Verna Mae (Godshall) Detweiler, 87, of Souderton, PA; formerly of Harleysville, PA & Telford, PA went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 4, 2025 at Souderton Mennonite Homes.
She was the loving wife of the late Walton N. Detweiler for 33 years. Verna Mae was born in Telford, PA to the late Jonathan Godshall and the late Mamie (Metz) Godshall.
She attended Franconia Mennonite School and then worked at the former Longacre Poultry in Franconia, PA and then at Hatfield Quality Meats in Hatfield, PA. Verna Mae then went to Ontario Mennonite Bible School in Canada where she discovered her love for learning. She then received her GED and decided to go to college to become a teacher. At the age of 28, she graduated from Eastern Mennonite College, class of 1965, with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education.
Verna Mae was employed as a beloved second grade teacher for the former Penn View Christian School (now known as Dock Mennonite Academy) in Souderton, PA for 16 years. She later worked as an aide for Indian Valley Nursery School in Souderton, PA.
She was a lifetime member of Franconia Mennonite Church.
Verna Mae enjoyed traveling with her husband and day trips to Lancaster County. She also enjoyed shopping, flower gardening, and collecting roosters and antiquing. She loved watching the Phillies, a good joke, and playing Rook. Her faith, her church family, and her pastors were very important to her.
Verna Mae was a fun-loving woman whose sense of humor was contagious.
She is survived by her six step-children, Marilyn Godshall & husband, Earl of Harleysville, PA, Gloria Detweiler & husband, Paul Bukovec of Elkins Park, PA, Laverne Detweiler & wife, Diane of Harleysville, PA, Clyde Detweiler of Prescott Valley, AZ, Ruthann Nyce & husband, Jerald of Telford, PA, Sharon Martin & husband, Bill of Harleysville, PA, her 13 step-grandchildren; her 30 step-great-grandchildren; her six step-great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Miriam Detwiler of New Milford, PA.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her seven siblings, Willard Godshall, Ernest Godshall, Jonathan Newton, Eva Greaser, Anna Landis, Linneaus Godshall, and Stanley Godshall.
A viewing will be held on Monday, May 12, 2025 from 9:00 am - 10:30 am at Souderton Mennonite Homes, 207 W. Summit Street, Souderton, PA 18964, followed by a funeral service at 10:30 am.
Burial will take place at Franconia Mennonite Cemetery.
