Antonio Ortiz Obituary

It is with profound sadness that our family announces the passing of Antonio Angel Ortiz, cherished son and brother, who passed away too soon on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at Baystate Medical Center, at the age of 24. He was surrounded by many loved ones, after a courageous battle with Renal Medullary Carcinoma (RMC). For over a year, Antonio faced this devastating disease with remarkable grace and strength, never allowing it to define his spirit. Antonio is survived by his adoring parents; Jennifer MacKenna and Jose "Yayo" Ortiz; siblings Nicole, Michael, Erika (Ortiz), Brandy (Morales); grandparents Lorna and Gilbert "Skip" MacKenna; grandmother Carmen Diaz; godparents Ken and Marie Fortin; girlfriend and soulmate Jerri Griffin; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; as well as his beloved cat Guayama. Born in Hartford, CT, Antonio was a resident of Westfield, MA and grew up in many areas, including Myrtle Beach, SC, Cleveland, OH and was a graduate of Enfield High School in Enfield, CT. He was a loving, caring and respectful young man, who left a lasting impression on everyone he met and formed many lasting friendships. Antonio was an athlete, growing up playing football, baseball and basketball. He remained active in his adulthood, enjoying 5-10 mile runs, just to relax. But his true passion was the outdoors: hiking, fishing, camping, off-roading and long drives in his Jeep, and spending hours at the range. He was always prepared, with his gear, for any tactical situation, which earned him the nickname "Tactical Tone". He also enjoyed trips to visit his loving grandparents in Florida, vacationing in Puerto Rico, adventures and mini vacations with his girlfriend, and long road trips he shared with his mother. After high school, Antonio was introduced to the culinary world by his sister, Nicole, and found his new love of food. He worked, by Nicole's side, at her restaurant, Crave and Crave Food Truck, both based out of Holyoke, MA. He also loved working with his siblings and other family members while at Crave. Antonio attended the HCC MGM Culinary Arts Institute and was a foodie and an aspiring chef. He enjoyed dining at the best restaurants in the area. Even throughout his battle, Antonio loved to explore new restaurants, while traveling for cancer treatments in Boston, MA and Houston, TX. Our family would like to sincerely thank the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the MD Anderson Cancer Center for their continuous care and compassion that was shown to Antonio. And to Father John Salatino, for being there spiritually and guiding Antonio throughout his journey. Antonio was more than a fighter – he was an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him and loving him. His journey may have ended, but his impact will forever remain in our hearts. Calling hours for Antonio will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, from 10-11:30 AM at Firtion-Adams Funeral Services, 76 Broad St., Westfield, MA with a funeral mass to follow at St. Mary's Church, 30 Bartlett St., Westfield, MA.
