Deane Stearns Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Deane A. Stearns, born July 19, 1931, in Brimfield, Massachusetts. A beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and proud veteran, who left this world on August 7, 2025, at the age of 94. Deane was the beloved son of the late Carl and Marjorie (Batchelder) Stearns and grew up in Brimfield. In 1957, he married his beloved wife Barbara A. (Palmer) Stearns, who predeceased him in 2015. Together they built a loving home in Palmer, where Deane continued to reside for the rest of his life. Deane was a proud father to Pamela Stearns of Palmer, Patricia Stearns of Belchertown, Susan Searah and her husband Edward of Brimfield, Norma Huntley and her husband Richard of Westhampton, and Deane A. Stearns, Jr. of Ludlow. He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren and to six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by six brothers, and he leaves behind his loyal four-legged companion, Lupe who was his hiking and beach buddy. He will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He served as a proud Korean War veteran of the United States Army and dedicated over 40 years to his career at Palmer Paving, where he retired as a supervisor. He and his wife were members of the St. Thomas Church in Palmer. Deane was an avid outdoorsman. He was a dedicated and experienced hunter who shared his passion with family and friends. He was able to continue his love for the sport at the remarkable age of 93. Deane always enjoyed taking long country road rides through Vermont and New Hampshire with his family throughout his life. His adventurous spirit took him to Alaska and Yellowstone Park, where he fulfilled his lifelong dream. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during calling hours on Wednesday, August 20th from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Beers & Story Palmer Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, August 21st at 11:00 AM at St. Thomas Church on Thorndike Street in Palmer. Please meet directly at the church. Burial will follow with military honors at the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Agawam at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in Deane's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The family wants to thank the medical staff at Innovative Dialysis Center in Chicopee for their compassionate care and the staff from Hulmes Transportation for their kindness and support for our father.
