Dennis Burnell Obituary

In Loving Memory of Dennis Burnell It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Dennis Alvin Burnell, who left us on February 8, 2025, at the age of 75. He was truly the best father in the universe, a loving and caring husband, a cherished grandfather, the greatest uncle, and a dear friend to many. Born on July 14, 1949, in Hartford, Connecticut he was the third of six sons of Charles Burnell and Edna (LaMere) Burnell. He proudly served his country as a Vietnam Veteran and was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice. After his military service, he went back to school to finish his senior year at Suffield High School in Connecticut. He spent the next 40+ years as a diligent blue-collar worker where he eventually retired in 2009 with the Connecticut Department of Transportation. His commitment to duty, both in the military and in his career, was like no other. His passions extended beyond his work. He was an avid fisherman and gardener. He spent his retired years visiting local farmers' markets, always stopping at the side of the road vegetable and flower stands, coffee shops, and bakeries. He enjoyed tinkering around in his workshop and outside in his shed. He enjoyed meeting people and sparking up conversations. He wore his Vietnam Veteran hat proudly and appreciated being recognized and thanked for his service. He was a great teacher. He never judged anyone. He was a peacemaker; always trying to see the good in people. He was always willing to lend a hand, give advice, offer a suggestion. He had an unwavering commitment to helping others. For the last 44 years he was dedicated to Alcohol Anonymous where he found strength and community in his journey to sobriety by serving as a sponsor and a mentor to countless women and men. He enjoyed taking the back roads, finding peace and beauty on the scenic routes less traveled. Dennis is survived by his loving wife of fifty years, Marilyn (Mylek) Burnell, his two daughters Lori and her fiancé David Pacholski, Jessica and her husband Jason Currier, and his three beloved grandchildren - Natalee, John Jr and Austin - who were his pride and joy. He also leaves behind two surviving brothers Theodore Burnell and Donald Burnell, and was predeceased in death by his brothers Ernest Burnell, Albert Burnell, and Daniel Burnell. He leaves behind nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, his best friends Kent Gilbert and Joe Santanella, and so many more. He will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by all. A memorial service to honor his life will be held on Monday, February 17, 2025, from 1pm to 4pm at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels located at 43 Shaker Road in Enfield, Connecticut. We take comfort in knowing that he is now at peace. His legacy

Marilyn, Lori and Jessica,

My sincerest condolences to you and your entire family. From a very young age Dennis came into our lives he was a larger-than-life figure to my brother and I. To a youngster he was magic and you couldn´t wait to see him after you said goodbye. Little did I know the impact he would have on our family. As a kid I didn´t understand the bond that he and my father had nor what it meant to our families. As I grew up, I understood the bond between the two men thus the impact he had on so many people.

I will miss his booming voice, our long talks on our fishing trips to Vermont, the way he could wind up my mother in the blink of an eye, his quick sense of humor but most of all I will miss the friendship between he and my dad.

God bless you all.

We will always remember your dad as a fun loving and quick-witted man.
He always made us laugh with his many stories while we were growing up and they always came one right after the other.
We have so many memories to be thankful for.
What a wonderful tribute to our cousin Dennis.
May he be at peace now.
Sending our thoughts, love and prayers to your mom and to you and your families.
May peace be with you.
