He was my music teacher at North High School in Binghamton, NY in 1972-73. I was a freshman. He taught me how to read music and introduced me to the singing style of the late great Johnnie Ray. He sang w/Tri-Cities Opera (one of the best schools in the world). He got the role of Tiriddu in Cavaleria Rusticana and offered tickets to anyone who wanted to go. I was hooked! Don Giovanni was next and he got me in again as an usher.
He asked me and another student to clean out the Choir office in a loft. It was a mess! We did.It took us 8 hours between lunch and chorus. He was so thankful he gave each of us a small bust of a composer. I got Mozart. I still have it.
Because of him I studied w/Tri=Cities Opera from 1977-1980. And I met Johnnie Ray in Las Vegas in 1982 and spent 2 hours w/him and his band.
Oh, was he funny! He got the choir ice cream cones:
Us: Mr. Hull, you have ice cream in your mustache."
Him: What?
"You have ice cream in your mustache!"
"I'm sorry, I can't hear you, I have ice cream in my mustache!"
We loved him. He was a gift. His captivating tenor voice will be unmatched.
My heart goes out to his family.
May the Father of the Universe comfort all with His very Breath.
