Edward Hull Obituary

Edward Glen Hull of Branford passed away at age 85 on Tuesday March 18. He was the husband of Diane Pendleton Hull of Branford for 47 years. They raised their four children – Cameron, Vanessa, Justin, and Patrick in Branford ever since they first moved to the area in 1984. He is survived by his children, his son-in-law Masa Fujimoto, daughters-in-law Michelle Hull and Kelly Tully, his sister Elizabeth (Clifford) Athorn of Minneapolis, MN, and five grandchildren- Haru, Noah, Nari, Oliver, and Norah. He is preceded in death by his father C. Max Hull, mother Dorean Davis Hull, brother James Hull, and sister Margaret Hull. Edward was born in Chicago on December 1, 1939. He developed a love of music at an early age and spent his childhood singing in school and church productions. He later obtained a Bachelor of Music from Syracuse University, a Master of Music from the University of Illinois, and a Doctorate of Music from Memphis State University. He went on to perform as an oratorio soloist with St. Bartholomew's Church, the Westchester Chorale, and the New York Choral Society and in major tenor operatic roles with the Manhasset Bay Opera Company and Southern Opera Theatre. Edward also taught voice and opera at several universities and served as a music and drama teacher for Bridgeport Public Schools for many years. He served as Co-minister of Music along with his wife Diane at the First Congregational Church of Branford from 1984 – 1989. He was also revered locally as the tenor soloist for Branford's production of Handel's Messiah for 30 years. Aside from music, Edward was also passionate about fitness, reading, writing, and humor. He was also a devoted father and faithful attendee of his children's many dance, music, sporting, and academic events over the years. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Branford on Saturday, April 5th at 11:00 A.M. He was my music teacher at North High School in Binghamton, NY in 1972-73. I was a freshman. He taught me how to read music and introduced me to the singing style of the late great Johnnie Ray. He sang w/Tri-Cities Opera (one of the best schools in the world). He got the role of Tiriddu in Cavaleria Rusticana and offered tickets to anyone who wanted to go. I was hooked! Don Giovanni was next and he got me in again as an usher.
He asked me and another student to clean out the Choir office in a loft. It was a mess! We did.It took us 8 hours between lunch and chorus. He was so thankful he gave each of us a small bust of a composer. I got Mozart. I still have it.
Because of him I studied w/Tri=Cities Opera from 1977-1980. And I met Johnnie Ray in Las Vegas in 1982 and spent 2 hours w/him and his band.
Oh, was he funny! He got the choir ice cream cones:
Us: Mr. Hull, you have ice cream in your mustache."
Him: What?
"You have ice cream in your mustache!"
"I'm sorry, I can't hear you, I have ice cream in my mustache!"
We loved him. He was a gift. His captivating tenor voice will be unmatched.
My heart goes out to his family.

Dear Hull family, I am very sorry to hear of Edwards passing he was a great mentor to many including me, and will be a cherished memory always, may he rest in peace.
