Jodi Ranney Obituary
Jodi, born Sept. 28th, 1970 in Middletown, CT, died on Aug. 8, 2025, after a lifelong battle with addiction. Jodi, or Jodessa as some lovingly called her, never met a stranger who wasn't a friend. She brought joy and laughter wherever she went, often cracking herself up in the process. She enjoyed speaking in an accent, especially a British or Southern one. When she found something funny, which she did a lot, she repeated it over and over- a line from a favorite movie (from Jim Carrey's The Grinch - "and the child mentioned… a check") or comedian, or stories about family or friends. She loved music and dancing and singing along to her favorites including Elvis, Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin, and Melissa Etheridge. The last person to judge, Jodi's philosophy was "live and let live." She was a loving soul, who had a special talent for caring for others, especially those who society overlooked, including the elderly and adults with disabilities. She saw the people they were and joked around with them the way she would joke around with anybody else. She was generous, and every friend or family member could tell a story about how Jodi showed up for them in one way or another. Her love and care extended to many plants and pets which, like music and laughter, were ever-present in her life. She was the quintessential "Daddy's little girl," and without a doubt, Jodi was most proud of her 4 beautiful children: Ryan, Ashley, Aaron, and Camryn. She loved being a mom, and they were everything to her. She was happiest and most at peace when she was by water, especially on a beach where she could lay out in the sun. Jodi leaves behind her kids Ryan, Ashley, Aaron, and Camryn Ranney; her father Frederick G. Gilbert and her mother and stepfather Tina (Marino) and Mark Loomis; her brothers Richard and Matt Gilbert, and Tony Loomis and her sister Lisa Loomis-Davern; her nephews Darren and Anthony Gilbert, Nick and Liam James, Atticus Loomis-Davern, Sebastian and Nico Loomis; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She was predeceased by her maternal grandparents Sebastian "Mike" and Carmelina (Carta) Marino and paternal grandparents Frederick and Mary Elizabeth (Greist) Gilbert, as well as her cousin Molly Willard. Calling hours will be held on Thursday August 28th from 5 to 7 p.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St. Middletown. Jodi will be remembered and celebrated with a service at St. Sebastian's Church, Washington St., Middletown on Friday August 29th at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow. Due to the disease of addiction, she struggled far more and experienced far more shame than she, or anyone, deserved. Jodi's family asks you to consider making a donation in her memory to the ROOT Center for Advanced Recovery or Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR).
