Lionel Smith Obituary

It is with profound sadness, yet immense gratitude, that we celebrate the life of Lionel Smith, who passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 22nd, 2025, at 85. Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we take comfort in remembering a life filled with love, laughter, and purpose. Born on February 10, 1940, in Weimar, Trinidad and Tobago, to father, Phillip Smith and mother, Doris Cooper, Lionel lived a life of kindness, generosity, and unwavering strength. He touched countless lives with his warmth and compassion, always putting others before himself. Whether through his professional achievements, community involvement, or simple acts of everyday kindness, Lionel left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know him. A devoted husband, loving parent, cherished friend, and pillar of the community, Lionel embraced life with enthusiasm and grace. He found joy in All Fours, a card game for which he won many trophies, building and repairing things. He was a jack of all trades; mechanic, painter, electrician, carpenter, and plumber, and his infectious spirit brought joy to all who had the privilege of sharing in his journey. Though we grieve, we also celebrate the beautiful legacy Lionel leaves behind-a legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering hope. His memory will continue to inspire us every day. Lionel is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Smith; his sons, Aubrey and Reynold Smith; his brother, Leslie Smith; his sister, Lydia Smith; his fourteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and a host of friends and other loved ones who will forever cherish his memory. His eldest, Ashton J. Smith, predeceased him. A celebration of Lionel's life will be held on March 19th, 2025, at First Church of the Nazarene, 932 Capitol Avenue, Hartford, Ct, where we will gather to honor, remember, and find solace in the love he so freely gave. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Shriners Hospital, Hospital, in Lionel's honor, so that his spirit of giving may continue to make a difference. Rest in peace, dear Lionel. Your light will shine in our hearts forever.
