Mary Volz Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Sohon Volz, 29, of Vernon, beloved wife of Matthew Volz, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer. Born on June 1, 1996, in Norwalk, Mary was the cherished daughter of Michael C. Sohon of Monroe and Anne Breault Sohon of Stratford. Mary is survived by her loving sisters, Carol Sohon Taylor (TJ) of Wallingford and Julie Sohon (Mike Tardif) of West Haven; her nieces Avery and Shay Taylor, and nephew Tommy Taylor; and her loyal pups, Buster Posey and Sabrina Spellman. Mary was a cheerleader for Monroe AYF and Champion All Stars for a decade. She graduated from Masuk High School and the University of Connecticut where she met her soulmate Matt while working at UConn Transpo. Her career led her to EMCOR, where she worked as an HVAC dispatcher. She was an avid decorator, organizer, and online shopper-especially for others. She had a knack for finding the perfect gift and always made sure those around her felt loved and seen. She was known for her positive attitude, her ever present thumbs up sign, and loving the people in her life with all her might. Mary and Matt were die-hard UConn Men's Basketball fans and proudly attended two national championship wins as season ticket holders. She loved all things Disney and they visited the Most Magical Place on Earth every chance they got. Mary's wit was unmatched-she loved to laugh, tell jokes, and always found humor even in the hardest times. Her ability to lighten a room with a perfectly timed comment or wisecrack was a gift to everyone around her. Mary's zest for life was obvious to everyone who knew her. Mary faced her illness with extraordinary courage and unwavering determination. Her fighting spirit was fierce and unapologetic-she never gave up and chose to live fully and joyfully every single day. She was fun, selfless, and sassy. Mary made a celebration out of everything, even shaving her head. She loved getting her nails done, sending Christmas cards, and aspired to be the World's Best Aunt (she was). She read everything she could get her hands on, loved ice cream, her beautiful home library, Dunkin runs, and being with family in Maine. Mary loved Matt's family and they loved her as their own - her mother-in-law Kathy Volz of Terryville; sisters-in-law Katie Brown (Ben) of DuPont, WA and niece Madison; Erin Lerz (Patrick) of Wolcott; brother-in-law Brian A. Volz of Plainville, and their extended family. She is also survived by countless aunts, uncles, cousins and friends too numerous to mention by name. Mary was predeceased by her paternal grandparents Julian A. Sohon, Jr. and Nancy Cotter Sohon; maternal grandparents Jean and Irene Breault; maternal aunt Marcia BarenBregge; and father-in-law Brian E. Volz on June 28th. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, October 12, 2025, from 12–4 PM at the Aqua Turf Club, 556 Mulberry St, Plantsville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Dana Farber. Alternatively, please bring a book for any age to be donated by the family to hospitals, libraries, and organizations in Mary's honor. Arrangements are being handled by Scott Funeral Home, 169 Main St, Terryville. For more information, visit www.scottfuneralhomeinc.com.
