Robert S. Slater

Robert S. Slater, 99, of Wallingford passed away on Sunday, September 7, 2025 at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in West Haven, CT. He was born in New Haven on May 9, 1926, a son of the late Stephen and Blanche (Goodwin) Slater. Bob grew up working on the family farm. He served in the US Army during the Korean War where he received the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with 1 bronze service star, the Combat Infantryman Badge 1st Award and the United Nations Service Medal. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he worked as an oil burner technician for Backes Fuel for many years until his retirement in the early 1980s. He kept active by walking at Choate track with friends and enjoyed bowling into his early 90s. His garage was always busy with keeping his family's, friend's and neighbor's vehicles and lawn equipment in top shape. He enjoyed watching and critiquing the Boston Red Sox, NY Giants and UConn basketball games. Bob is survived by his sons, Terry Slater (Laurie) of Guilford and Scott Slater (Julie) of Iowa; his brother, Richard Slater (Donna) of Wallingford; and the children of his former wife Marguerite; Louise Van Deun of Wallingford and Bill Blais (Cheryl) of Meriden. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Bette Tuttle Slater; his wife, Marguerite Blais Slater; and his sister, Patricia Anziano. The family is grateful for the care provided by the Veteran's Administration Medical Center and his many caregivers at home. In honor of Bob's wishes, services and burial in In Memoriam Cemetery will be held privately. Arrangements are under the direction of The Wallingford Funeral Home.
