Roger Robbins Obituary

Roger A. Robbins, the beloved husband of Dorothy W. Robbins for sixty-nine years, died peacefully on September 5, at the age of 91. He was the son of the late Alfred Otis Robbins and Eleanor Kimball Robbins. A graduate of Oliver Wolcott Technical School and Hartford State Technical Institute, he served in the United States Navy for four years during the Korean War. For thirty-three years he was employed by the New Departure Division of General Motors where he served an apprenticeship as a tool and die maker and retired as a tool and die estimator and expediter. An avid Boston Red Sox fan, he pursued his interest in baseball by umpiring high school baseball games, coaching Little League for twenty years, and serving on the Little League Board of Directors. He was also a member of United Congregational Church where he served in various capacities including Moderator, Physical Resource Facilitator, Bell Choir, Cemetery Team, Trustee, Sunday School Teacher, and Boy Scout Troop I Liaison. In addition, he was a sixty-year member of Seneca Masonic Lodge, a volunteer for the RSVP reading program at Torringford School, and an usher for the Warner Theatre. Other interests included golf, biking, woodworking, clock building and repairing, ballroom dancing, cross-country skiing, and traveling. He was also a railroad buff. In addition to his wife, he is survived by many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his sisters: Alyce Wallenhorst, Carolyn Zucco and Beverly Heins, and brothers-in-law: Robert Wallenhorst, Francis Zucco, and John Heins. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 13, at 11:00 AM at United Congregational Church, 1622 Torringford Street, Torrington, CT. Burial will be in the Torringford Cemetery. The Montano-Shea Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Commemorative Gifts Fund at United Congregational Church, 1622 Torringford Street, Torrington, CT 06790. We have so many wonderful memories of times spent with both of you! We are so sad to learn of Roger´s passing. He was a great man who gave so much of himself to the community. He will be missed by so many people.
