Sylvester A. Vassel

Sylvester A. Vassel, 80, of Hartford, CT, beloved husband and father passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at UConn John Dempsey Hospital. Sylvester was born in Jamaica on May 3, 1944. The son of the late Oscar and Enid Louise (Wallace) Vassel, he was raised in St. James and St. Elizabeth, Jamaica and attended Grove School where he graduated. After graduating from high school, Sylvester gained employment at the local post office as a Mail Courier. After leaving the post office he became a Cruise Line Worker, on the Norwegian Cruise Line for Star Cruises. Prior to his migration to the Unites States he worked for many years as a self-employed tour guide driver who was also one of the founding members of the Jamaican Union of Travelers Association (JUTA) tourist board. In the United States he continued his work of service as a security guard for Guardsmark for several years before retiring. Sylvester was a longtime member of King's Chapel Church of God. Sylvester took part in many activities within the life of the church including singing in the Men's Choir and served as an Usher. He leaves to mourn his passing three children, Joscelyn Vassel and his wife Jaqueline Vassel of Jamaica, Camille Williams and her husband Christopher Williams of Connecticut, and Zara Vassel of Florida; his grandson, Chace Williams of Connecticut; nine brothers and sisters, Millicent Vassel of Toronto, Canada, Mable Reynolds of Covington, GA, Cecila King and her husband Arthur of Covington, GA, Merline Jones and her husband Barnswell of Covington, GA, John Vassel and his wife Marvette of Covington, GA, Vivian Vassel of Hartford, Claude Vassel of Hartford, CT, and Barrington Vassel and his wife Patricia of Jamaica; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, William, Byron, and Rupert Vassel and sister, Beryl Woodstock. As well as his late wife Paulette Vassel. His family will receive friends on Saturday, February 15, 9-10 a.m., followed by a Homegoing Service at 10 a.m., at King's Chapel Church of God, 400 Woodland Street, Hartford. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Bloomfield. Carmon Windsor Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
