William Carroll Obituary

William P. Carroll, 80, of Newington, CT beloved husband of the late Christine M. Carroll passed away on June 24th, 2025 at Jerome Home in New Britain after a battle with Parkinson's disease. William was born September 21, 1944 in Herkimer, NY and was the son of the late John F. Carroll and Josephine (Ryan) Autenrith. He graduated from West Canada Valley Senior High School, a regional school serving his hometown of Newport, NY, Class of 1963. Bill attended Niagara University on a ROTC scholarship and earned a degree in Business Administration. After graduation in 1968, he was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant and served his country honorably in the US Army Finance Corps. Bill served on active duty for four years, including along the DMZ in South Korea. Bill specialized in finance and budgeting and would continue in the Army Reserve for over 20 years, notably serving as Comptroller of the 76th Division (Training) before retiring from the 94th Army Reserve Command as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1996. He proposed to Christine in Tegucigalpa while serving a year at Camp Oso Grande in Honduras with the road-building Blazing Trails '87 task force. As a civilian, William worked in insurance, primarily for the Aetna Life Insurance Company in Illinois, California and Connecticut. In his free time, Bill was an avid skier as a member of the Aetna Ski Club and loved the trails in Lake Tahoe, a fan of the Hartford Whalers and New York Yankees, and was proud of having attended the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and the game where Derek Jeter got his 3000th hit. After marriage, Bill and Chris traveled widely, taking cruises and trips throughout the United States and Europe. Bill's outgoing personality meant they often returned home with new friends made on their excursions. Upon retirement, Bill volunteered with Church of the Incarnation – now part of the Christ the King parish – on the Men's Club and Building and Grounds Committee, with the Employment Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), for the American Legion, with the Knights of Columbus, on the board of their condo association, and for the Tops Club out of the Newington Senior Center. He applied his expertise in budgeting for the benefit of many of these organizations. William is survived by his stepson Richard Niro and his wife Jennifer of Southington, CT and grandchildren, Matthew, Andrew, and Emma. Bill had a special place in his heart for his wife's family, including her siblings, their spouses, cousins, nieces, and nephews and for Jennifer's family. Bill also kept in touch with many close friends he had made in childhood or later in his working life. In addition, to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his stepfather, Gerald Autenrith, and his dear aunt and uncle, Alice and Philip Ryan. Bill came from a small family but made everyone feel like part of his inner circle. We would like to thank the staff at Hartford Healthcare, including Jerome Home/Arbor Rose, Cedar Mountain Commons, Hospice Care, and Independence at Home for helping to care for Bill during his last years. Funeral service for William will be held Tuesday, July 1, 2025 at 10am at Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect Street, Wethersfield, CT.
