William Millerick Obituary

William (Bill) Francis Millerick passed away peacefully with his wife by his side on April 15, 2025, at the age of 77. Family, friends and colleagues are deeply saddened to lose him, but we know his arrival in heaven was fantastic six-column, above-the-fold, front page news. Born February 7, 1948, in New Britain, CT, Bill was the first son of Eugene and Sylvia Millerick. On a summer vacation in 1966, Bill met the love of his life and beloved wife of 53 years, Gail Cail Millerick. After college, they married and began life's journey together. Bill was a devoted and loving husband, cherished brother, brother-in law, cousin, uncle and Godfather; and like his parents before him, family was the single most important thing in his life. Conversation thrived wherever Bill was, and countless hours were spent in the Millerick family homes simply talking, laughing, exchanging stories and debating ideas and public policy. He loved family gatherings – the bigger the better -- especially Fourth of July and Christmas. He enjoyed the many family ski trips to New Hampshire and Colorado. Bill and Gail treasured their vacations in Nantucket, Hilton Head and Venice, Florida where they purchased their retirement home. A graduate of Watkinson School and Central Connecticut State University, Bill went on to pursue a career in Journalism. Beginning in the 1970s as a sports reporter at The Herald of New Britain, he worked his way up to editor and eventually managing and executive editor. Bill Millerick loved every aspect of journalism and reporting -- from news gathering and writing to editing, selecting and placing the stories of the day. He enjoyed the organized chaos of the newsroom along with the occasional frenzy of scrapping a whole layout to accommodate breaking news at deadline – and still making sure the presses ran and the delivery trucks were loaded on time. He could intently listen to a reporter in his office, keep an ear on the scanner, manage the ever-changing "news hole" as advertisements were placed or pulled, and rapidly edit copy without breaking a sweat – which he saved for ball games with The Herald's team. Bill always understood that the competition wasn't other newspapers, but television and then later, the internet, and even on the day he died, he was an avid news junkie, reading the "gray ladies" and watching electronic news sources. But most of all he loved the reporters he managed and mentored at The Herald. He loved telling stories of his cub reporter days under the venerable Dick Conway, "Millerick, when I tell you to write a story about peaches, I want to see juice dripping off the damn page!" He understood the importance of great writing and pushed his reporters to their best work. A newsman's newsman, he loved the smell of the newsroom and everything about the close camaraderie, the yelling for copy, the ringing phones and clacking keyboards. Bill firmly believed that "once you covered daily news for a local newspaper you could do anything, for anyone," and many graduates of Bill's newsroom went on to successful careers in journalism and related fields. But no matter how far reporters, photographers and fellow editors went, they'd keep in touch because Bill played such an important role in their lives, both personally and professionally. As The Herald's ownership evolved, Bill's passion for people and New Britain continued when he changed careers and became the President of the New Britain Chamber of Commerce from 1998 to 2013. Bill was the face of the city's business community and one of its biggest cheerleaders. He was one of New Britain's most successful, well-liked, and highly regarded Chamber presidents. As at The Herald, his Chamber staff worked hard to deliver their best work for Bill, knowing those efforts were understood and appreciated. In fact, making people feel seen and appreciated for their talents was one of Bill's most special gifts. He was an intensely loyal and steadfast cheerleader and knew that when people felt encouraged and confident they could achieve any goal. Bill is survived by his wife, Gail; sister, Michele Erling of Bluffton, SC; brother, John and wife, Kathy of Bradenton, FL and East Haven; brother James and wife, Susan, of Old Lyme, CT; brother-in-law, Thomas Cail of Enfield and many nieces, nephews and Godchildren all of whom brought him great joy. Bill was predeceased by his father and mother, Eugene and Sylvia and uncles, aunts and cousins, and most recently by his brother-in-law, Gordon Erling and sister-in-law, Donna Cail Holmes. Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 25, 2025, from 5 - 7 pm at the Plainville Funeral Home, 81 Broad Street, Plainville. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 9 am from the funeral home, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at Our Lady of Mercy, Broad Street, Plainville. Committal Will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. The family gives heartfelt thanks to Bill's visiting nurse, Ellen Rohrback, his aides, Bingle, Nana, Lisa, Mariza and his YMCA adaptive trainers, Christy, Charles and Paul. Donations in Bill's memory may be made to Watkinson School, 180 Bloomfield Avenue, Hartford, CT 06105 or The Petit Family Foundation, P.O. Box 310, Plainville, CT 06062. Bill was not just a friend, but was a mentor. In my 1st real "grown up" job, he hired me to work under him at the Greater New Britain Chamber of Commerce. Working under Bill, with his diversity of experiences, and incredible personal network, helped me to learn not just how to be a professional, but how to connect with others. He will be truly missed as he played a HUGE part in me being in the Economic Development field almost 2 decades after Bill gave me that chance in New Britain. As a Plainville kid, the Millerick name is so important through the generations as a family of honor, giving back and more. Gail, I am so sorry, but know that you will continue to do what you are great at - giving back and helping others. God Bless all of the extended family.

Bill was a great boss and mentor at the New Britain Herald to so many reporters. He helped create an atmosphere that led to lifelong friendships. I have many fond memories of chatting with him in his office, and I was sad to hear of his recent passing. Sending love to his family.

Gail & family:my sincere condolences on the passing of Bill whom I spent a great deal of time with over the years when he was at the Herald and I was serving at City Hall. That was followed by his years at the Chamber where we were involved with issues of importance to the City of New Britain. There are many moments you share in your passage thru life and one is we shared birthdays but he would remind me I was a year older. The other was spending the day with Bill playing in a golf tournament in Glastonbury when we hit our 1st drive we were informed that airplanes had just hit the Twin Towers it was /9/11. Memories from years past about a good guy who always gave it his best. May he rest in peace.BRENDAN KENNEDY

Billy and I were childhood friends growing up together in Plainville. We played a lot at Norton Park playing baseball and summer league basketball . We shared a lot of laughs in class . His parents and his siblings Michelle and John made their home a great place to hang out. Bill enjoyed working on an old International scout in the back yard. A couple of years ago I visited Bill and Gail when I was back East. I was so proud of his career in journalism and business. We laughed about our adventures as kids. I will miss him dearly,

Many memories of Bill at The Herald during my brief political career. Later, at the front desk at the Hospital of Special Care, we had many chats. He had a life well lived. Surely, God met Bill with open arms an said. " Well done, Bill. Welcome home."

I am falling apart knowing a world without Bill is not turning. Bill was my first supporters running for Mayor in New Britain. He saw people as people, being a African American he saw everyone will succeed not by who you are but the City will move forward.
Gail and families i am so proud of Bill, the New Britain African American Community as well of those who knew Bill will say THANK YOU Bill for helping opening doors for us all when he was here in New Britain.
GOD BLESS HIM FOREVER MORE.

I worked with Bill at the Herald as a sports editor and writer for a few years before I moved to Northeast Utilities. What I remember the most was the confidence and trust he had in you to do your job. He would guide and mentor but he didn't embarrass one in front of co-worker. I remember his positive attitude which can be difficult to keep when you are running a newsroom. I am glad I had the opportunity to work with him.

To the entire Millerick family,I´m sorry to hear the news of Bill´s passing. Although Bill was a few years older, our paths would cross over the years growing in town. I always enjoyed reading his articles during his career at the Herald. I know his family will miss Bill and will realize a tremendous void in their lives.
Now go in Peace Bill. Your friend Dan.

I worked with Bill at the Herald and was sad to see him leave for the Chamber, however, when I was up for a job at the Berlin Chamber of Commerce, I called Bill for guidance and he said I could do this and that it was like getting paid to play! He was right - clearly we both enjoyed that work even though his was on a much larger scale. His encouragement resulted in the confidence that helped me win that job...for that I will always be thankful. Greatest guy ever - voice of reason and an empathetic ear! Rest in peace Bill.....
